I am in need of a 1911 in .22LR. for training/target shooting. I'd like one without breaking the bank. I'm not looking for match or competition grade, just for plinking and shooting paper to get better at shooting.

So what can the hivemind tell me about 1911s in .22LR?

Bought one about 18 months ago. Eats everything I have shot in it. Really fun gun and great practice tool as I carry a full sized 1911 at the shop most days.

I have a RIA GI clone and I bought a Marvel Unit 2 for it years ago. A little work on the trigger of the RIA and it shoots sweet, as long as I do my part.

You can also buy just the upper and it also works great.

Agree with a conversion. Keeps your current centerfire grip and trigger. A good marvel kit is far superior to the current crop of German made umarex plinkers, and not much more expensive

German made umarex plinkers = toilet plungers

Whatever you do, don't buy one of those plastic and pot metal 22lr that are everywhere these days. That means Umarex and GSG and whatever other brands they market them under Colt, HK, Walther etc. They are junk and have no value because they will never hold up over time. They are toys.

Just get a quality conversion and use the frame from whatever 1911 you already have.

I have a Kimber conversion that I purchased about 10 years ago and shot quite a bit. It has been as good as my Browning Buckmark which is very reliable.

I have read a lot of good things on the Marvel and am thinking of getting one.

I was looking at a Browning 1911-22 A1. Does anyone know much about them?

Buy the Marvel conversion.  $400 or so.  I know, don't need competition grade but why not buy the accurate one?

Iirc they are 80% sized.  As in it won’t be a twin to your .45, but smaller, scaled down.

Another vote for a Marvel kit.

On a dedicated receiver if you can swing it.

I have a Kimber and Marvel conversion.   The Marvel is more accurate but the Kimber runs a wider array of ammo.

I have a GSG too, it's fairly reliable, a little less so than the Kimber.

I laugh when I see posts like this. And I assume you have never owned one. I picked up the Umarex/Colt Rail Gun .22 from a gun show about 6 years ago for $300. Since then I've put probably 8,000 rounds of .22 through it and only had a handful of failure to fires with cheap ammo. No more then I've had in the same timeframe with my 10/22 or Buckmark. I find it every bit as reliable as any .22 I have ever shot or owned. Is it cheaply made? Sure, but it was only $300 and it's fun as hell to shoot. Last time I had it out was a month ago for the kids at a family reunion to shoot. They burned through two 550 rounds bricks with zero issues.

The GSG is a decent gun for the money.
Change the guide rod and spring first thing.
CW Accessories sells aftermarket parts that lets you customize.

This is absolutely the answer.  That upper I had was crazy accurate and reliable.

My favorite pistol is a Kimber Target Rimfire topend on a Ruger SR1911 bottom end. Came with target sights but i did replace the front with a red fiber. i have no problem emptying a mag into a 12" gong at 85 yards. will run most ammo but i tend to use Blazer .22 in it. Also i have found that the promag plastic mags work fantastic in this gun. i have 12 of them and you can get them in 10 and 14rd.

Colt conversion unit

I had a Peters-Stahl conversion prior to this, and it wasn't quite the 1911 analogy I was looking for.

I have one with Kreiger accu rails on a Caspian frame. Shoots well but a bit finicky.

My Complete Colt one, if cleaned as needed, is quite reliable.

I have a GSG that functions perfectly and shoots " pretty good".Not a legitimate target pistol but adequate for plinking and informal targets.
I use it on gov't length frame and also my Commander.

Many years ago I had a Colt conversion unit I bought and mated to an Federal Ordinance alloy frame.    Made a very nice reliable 22 rimfire 1911.   I sold this pistol to cover medical bills.   I later bought an Advantsge Arms standard 1911 kit which is similar design to Marvel unit 2 kit.   I mated my AA kit to a dedicated RIA 1911 frame.   The AA may not be as classy as the Colt but it shoots better.   I’d recommend the AA 1911 kit, either full blown Target or Standard kit.

^^^^ This. I have a Marvel Unit 1 permanently mounted on a SA MilSpec. Until I can get a High Standard or a S&W Model 41, it's my go-to tack driver. Awesome to shoot, reliable, and with a steel 1911 frame, recoil is super tame.

I think for the $, this is the best buy.  You can use the lower for other calibers.

I love my Kimber upper on my Norinco frame. Runs like a champ and the same trigger as my 45.
I also have 6 Ceiner 15 round mags.
Great training aid

I'm thinking of buying one of those $119.00 stripped RIA frames from Sarco. Minus a ejector and two grip screws I have the parts to complete it.

I have a Kimber unit that works well that I use on a SA frame. It would be nice to have a dedicated frame for it without having to buy the whole pistol.

I bought a RIA frame off gunbroker a few years ago which had the ejector, grip screw studs and safety detent tube installed.   I had a few RIA take off parts and bought the rest of the parts from Brownell’s.   Only the thumb safety needed any fitting.   I just saw this frame for sale which has the ejector, grip studs and safety detent tube installed.   The frame mounted ejector is not needed with a Kimber 22 conversion but I like having it in case I want to use a centerfire slide.   Also a good idea to get a reduced power hammer spring which increases reliability with 22 rimfire conversions.   I think I used an 18 pound hammer spring.
