I love my Glock 20 and G40 10mms but as far as finding a good JHP there isn’t much out there.

I was looking for an outdoor round that would work good on everything if possible, I’m in CA so there’s not too many huge animals.

Is there a good JHP?  I’ve seen underwood gold dot is pretty good but as I remember it’s penetrstion and expansion is pretty close to HST 40 and HST 45 is probably a better performer.

I guess I’m simplifying and I know a hard cast 10mm is hard to beat penetration wise but as far as all around bullet for animals and two legged predators do you guys have a recommendation?  I’m I thinking about this wrong ?

Sometimes I think we overthink this stuff with ammo

Mostly I carry Winchester Silvertips or my gold dot handloads. If I need penetration or think I might I mix some hardcast or Trophy Bonded in the mag

Ammo opinions are like A$$ holes, everybody has one

The 175 grain Silvertip and the 180 grain JHPs from various manufacturers should serve well for that purpose.  They combine adequate penetration with adequate expansion.

Any load is a compromise in this area.  You can only obtain more penetration by the loss of expansion and vice versa.

I've tested the 175 Silvertips, was not impressed. The Trophy Bonded has a lot of octane. I have not seen one 180 Gold Dot that has not disintegrated from any manufacturer. Speer's 200 Gold Dot or the Underwood 200 XTP seems to be the obvious choices here.

Just my experienced opinion.

I'm not comfortable with the Underwood Gold Dot since it's pushed so far beyond it's design threshold.

The 200gr gold dot seems to test very well as does Underwood 200gr XTP. The Gold Dot isn't quite as hot so recoil might be nicer too. I just use the Underwood 200gr xtp but I had to get a stiffer spring.

I carry a mix of gold dots and every other round FMJ  flatpoint.  Best thing I can figure .

If you want an all purpose load that is balanced more towards trail defense, the Federal 180gr Trophy Bonded soft point is what you're looking for.

My .02..if you are having reliability problems..
Winchester Silver Tips. Pushing Silver Tips at or over 1100 is where they shine.
Most of the performance issues you hear about with them are loading s with reduced velocity’s.
The OG on the projectile is just right and the jacket just a tiny bit harder. Enhancing feeding.
My go to for 1911. 15 years. No issues.

When you can find it.

I've been looking for some to try out on Deer this fall...pretty scarce.

My only source of it has been Midway. I ordered a 200 round case of it plus a few more boxes of it to test for average velocity, groups, and sim test in media.

It hurt the wallet but I got mine

I have about 10 cases of the stuff, thinking it was a great "all around" 10mm load. Now I'm not so sure. There was a gel test done with 4 layers of denim and the bullet failed to expand, penetrating 30+ inches.

i wish there was a 200 grain XTP out there that wasn't loaded as nuclear as Underwood

Hornady's load using either the 180 or 200 gr XTP. I have shot both and function 100%. It's a moderate load, like the Silver Tip but like you said, in Cali, you will be facing a mountain lion or meth heads, not brown bears.

Sig V-crown 180gr JHP.

It did awesome in the luckygunner test. Over 3/4" expansion and 19.4" penetration.

I've been using the Sig V Crown in my DW Bruin.  I use this set up for bowling pin matches.   It performs wonderfully.   Even when the bowling pins are full of lead, this round knocks the pin clean off the table ( & then back a few more feet!)

Nice! I'll have to try that load in my G20.

If a dose of 200gn 10mm 'Grizzley' ammo will put a bear down, or at least turn it's charge, it'll probably launch a would-be street mugger or burglar into next week, DOA.

Are you talking about handloads? ... or the 10mm STHPs as they come from the Winny factory (silver box)?

'Cause the factory load is 'box-flapped' at 1290fps, supposedly from a 6" factory test barrel. If that's actually a true velocity spec, that means out of a real-world 5" gun barrel (Delta Elite, Sig P220, S&W 1006), they're really doing more like 1250fps at best.

However, on boards like GT, the STHPs have gotten criticized a lot over the years by 10mm users with access to chronographs. They tested samples of different lots of STHPs and often got inconsistent and downloaded velocity readings with averages that weren't even close to the factory specs.  Loads from some lots were recorded as low as 1125fps from 5" barrels, and 1100fps from the G20's 4.6" barrel.

That's just watered-down .40-level ammo with a 10mm price tag attached.  .

And who wants that shit? Just buy a .40 pistol and be done with it.

I would love to see a 200 grain HST engineered properly running at 1200-1275 fps.

Bluefalcon did some reloads with the HST and it looked good.

Yep, so this.

A 200gn 10mm HST @ 1250fps would be the Cat's ass high-n-hard.

I had to shoot a pit bull that was attacking my neighbor a couple years back.

Grabbed my “house gun” a Glock 20 with a SF X300U on it loaded with 135gr Corbon.

One shot (double lung / heart) was like a bolt of lightning. Outstanding performance.

I’d had the gun loaded with that ammo for 5+ years so I decided to refresh it after the incident.

Ended up getting a lot of recommendations to replace with Corbon DPX 155gr.

It sits with 3 mags of it ready to go.

It uses a Barnes solid copper bullet and is supposed to be loaded hot (not fast .40sw)
