around 1980, I started shooting USPSA (actually IPSC), and met a range officer at a local range that had been a tool and die pattern maker at Singer... he had an X serial numbered Singer that been a pre production model... his wife had it "bumper chromed"  for a wedding present in the early 50s....

61 bids, 12 days left.  That will crack a $100,000 for sure.

Does anyone know how many of the original 500 still exist?  How many are in collector's hands nowadays?

Only a guess but I imagine in all original good plus condition probably only a few dozen and that may be a high guess. The story goes most were issued to the army air corps so many ended up in the Atlantic, English Channel or French countryside. Then add general attrition in Korea and Vietnam plus post war rebuild programs and there can’t be many. With the CMP 1911A1 release it will be interesting to see how many. Go to the Auction page.

Out of the original 500, only about 12,000 still exist!

Edited to add -

The guy selling this one (Jack the Dog) is noted to be a standup guy who sells good stuff, not fakes and junk. And this one was examined and verified by Charles Clawson, so I would bet it's GTG. But the Singer 1911A1 is one of the most faked pieces of militaria out there. Unless I were buying one like this with all the certification and other stuff that comes from a reputable dealer, I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole! Easy way to get scammed out of a LOT of $$.

Pretty much every USGI 1911 will have the scratch from one idiot or another

When I was a very young boy, 66 now, my Dad told me he had a 1911 in WWII that was made by Singer Sewing Company. He said it was the worst shooting 45 he had ever shot. My dad tossed it into a mud puddle and went and took a Colt 45 from a pile of weapons taken off of wounded soldiers.

May have had a rusted up ruined barrel from the corrosive ammo used at the time but Singers were extremely well made and built as they were almost ''hand fitted'' due to the low number made.

A friend that is knowledgeable on such things told me maybe 2/3 survived intact and far fewer than that escaped the rebuild process.

I'm not surprised at all to see that example going so high.

Over on the 1911 Forum, I found out that the guy who owned it is the former CEO of Continental Airlines. This was one he decided to sell, since he has several more. Must be nice!
