I've owned a P228 for almost 3 years now, and get this...  I've never had a chance to fire it.

I bought it (barely) used in 2003 for $530, and then I deployed to Kuwait for a year.  I left my P228 with my brother for safe keeping.  I came home for a very short 6 months and then left for Iraq for a year, and never had a chance to get it back from my brother (who lives on the other side of the country).

I just got back from Iraq, so hopefully I can pick it up sometime this spring.  I'm planning to use it for CCW, if I ever get it back!  I'm tempted to buy another one to hold me over!

OK think I found one (A P228) - Local gun shop, all German made, marked made in Germany on slide), excellent condition, has P226 15 rnd mags with exenders, $495.

Oh it has the blackened stainless slide, trijicon night sights (probably expired). Very clean, looks like it was hardly shot at all. I really like it.

Yea or nay?

I have never seen a P228 with a Blackened Stainless Slide. Mine was Stamped steel and so were the Issue M-11's. Anyways thats a pretty good deal.

A 228 is the first gun I owned.  The gov later issued me one as my duty pistol as well.  I love em.

You are correct. It was a steel slide. The P239 i was looking at at the same time was what had the SS slide. I put my money down and will pick up the P228 as soon as I come up with the additional $110 to pay off the layaway.

I think this will make a nice addition to my collections of Sigs, and a welcome addition to my CCW rotation.

what is the difference between the P228 and the P229? Other than that you can get a railed version of the P229

Has anyone ever had an issue with the stamped slide? I know it is certainly lighter.

AFAIK the P228 slide is stamped steel whereas the P229 slide is machined from a steel forging.

what are the 220 and 226 stamped or forged?

Don't know about the 220, but I believe the 226, and definitely the 228 were stamped.

For ease of manufacture, I believe they've gone over to forged for all their guns now.  They do this to support .40 and .357 Sig models, but at the expense of making the 9mm model 226 and 229 extra heavy in the 9mm versions.

Everyone here posted that the 228 was better balanced feeling than the 229, but as they are limiting the 228 production to non-civilian runs,  I had to buy a 229 9mm.   It's heavy, wish it was lighter, but a good gun.

Buddy of mine has a factory nickel 228.  Nice pistol.

But I prefer my Hi Powers.

Which is stronger/less likely to fracture or wear out? forged or stamped?

I saw where they had a big lot of P229s that had failures in the slides a few years ago due to improper machining, on gunzone.com.

I have a P228 that I purchased new many years ago. I don't remember exactly the year I bought it. It has the K-Kote finish that I felt looked smoother and blacker than the blued finish offered at the time. Sig quit using the K-Kote years ago I believe.

Me.  Brand new unfired with 4 postban (no "LEO/GOVT" markings) hi-cap mags.

Saving it for a rainy day or whenever finances force me to sell it.  I'd LOVE to take it out and shoot it but I figure that would mean an instant depreciation of $100 or so and I can't afford that.

Having a wife and 3 kids can have it's drawbacks at times.

I just got an ANIB 228 a couple weeks ago for $550.  It has become my primary carry and I love it.

Yep, looked at the slide on my 220, way lighter than the machined stainless slide from my P239, even thought that slide is way smaller.

I guess you can't stamp stainless steel though.

The P228 is 9x19mm only, now only marketed to LE and Military in the US, although legal for civilians to own, obviously. Made in Germany only. (hence the reason they are prized). Stamped steel slide like the original German made P226 and P220, which is much lighter yet still very strong.

The P229 is now US produced only on a German made frame, slide is machined instead of stamped, making it cheaper to produce but much heavier. Allows SS also. P229 used to be traditionally .40 S&W and .357 Sig only, but now also available in 9x19mm to replace the P228 in the civilian market.

Hope that helps
