Oh yeah.  Watch some brewing videos.  Look for "easy home brewing."

I agree with the don’t rush it theory.  Also do your best to control fermentation temps.  Coolest location in your house, a water bath, evaporation cooling, a fridge with a temp controller, etc.

ETA.  Get plastic carboys or buckets.  Glass is dangerous as hell, look up some glass carboy injuries.

I used to be big on plastic fermentors for the same reason.
Then I bought one to try it out and I like them better than my better bottles.
all mine are now SS or glass
Glass is fine as long as you are careful with it.

I would recommend a carrier for it.  Just personal preference. We brew 2 batches at a time (11 gallon each) and usually have a few beers. 6-7 hours of brewing and beers so I’ll stick with plastic!  Haha

Edit for coherency

Get a cheap digital instant read thermometer from the supermarket or Wal-Mart, you'll use it a lot.

Hydrometers are cheap and an essential tool to know if you're doing it right.

1554 is an alright beer to start with. It's dark and has flavor. I enjoy German style beers but don't enjoy the lagering time and equipment. If you goof the temperatures lager yeast makes terrible flavors. I use a German ale yeast or even the California ale yeast for a nice clean neural ferment in a wide temperature range.

Allow your beer to cool off in the pot as low as you can get it. Put the pot in the sink with cold water if you have to. Once you transfer it to a glass or plastic fermenting vessel it will be very hard to cool it further. Warm wort ferments funky flavors.

I've been carrying around glass carboys for over 5 years now, and never broken one. I have 3, 5, and 7 gallon glass. BUT the plastic bucket works OK for Primary. I did a lot of my beers in a 7 gallon glass carboy, and never racked to secondary (straight to bottling bucket).
