I recently updated my iPad (Mini Gen 5) to iPadOS 14.6 and the charging protocol seems to have changed.

Here to fore, it would charge continuously up to and then remain at 100% as long as it was plugged in.

After the update, it now charges to 100% and then stops charging even though it is still plugged in.

If it is at 100% and I un/replug it in, it will attempt to charge and stop at 100%.

If it is less than 100%, it will recharge to 100% and again, stop.

So today I tested it to see if it (similar to the iPhone and MacBook) had a battery level threshold at which it will start recharging if, after reaching 100%, it stops charging…and it does not:  I let it charge to 100%, left it plugged in and used it until the battery was zero and it turned itself off; never initiated a charge cycle.

Anyone else notice this or know why it is acting this way?

Battery in settings doesn’t have a health feature like the iPhone/MacBook so nothing to be learned there.

I figured Apple did something like.

My iPhone and MacBook Air do something similar (charge to 80% and hold then go to 100% based on your charging patterns).  But they also start charging when the battery drops below 80%.

The fact that it won’t initiate a charge in its own is kind of annoying.

Example:  I plug it in when I go bed.  Used to wake up to a 100% battery.   Now, it will be <100%…how much less depends on when during the night it hit 100% and halted charging.

Granted, the battery life is good enough that it isn’t a problem, just odd to me that they would do that.

you have slightly more control on an iphone.  but yeah zero options on the ipad.

as long as this feature works....   i think its about time someone started to do something to extend the life of batteries


at work its not stop Dell laptop batteries about to blow/   a few have caught fire and almost burned down a  few homes because everyone leaves their electronics plugged in 24/7...  i on the other hand do not leave any laptop with a LION battery plugged in 24/7 EVER
