I was a helicopter mechanic for 20 years in the AF,  been taking apart and putting bikes, motorcycles, trucks, and whatever else back together since I been old enough to remember. But, WHY is Nitro so damn hard to get to run right ha ha? Has anyone cracked the code?

Nitro what?

Mainly because people make it difficult.   Or if it is a Cox engine, because those things are a pain in the ass.

Airplanes and helicopters, you have to remember running conditions change a bit in the air, tune on the ground so they run well in the air.

Cars?  Not sure, nearly ever car guy I have seen wants to run wayyy too lean.

So I have two traxxas nitro trucks. Pretty fun, but no where near as fast as even 4s lipo. I been reading a lot, trying to figure these things out, but in my opinion they are built so simple but can be so finicky.

But yes, if you don’t understand how they work you can make it pretty hard on yourself. I’m learning……

Depends on the motor, those are .21ish size?

Which fuel?

They are probably ABC motors, meaning you have to get them to a close to normal temp for break-in.  Learn what "four stroke rich" sounds like and start leaning from that.

Unless something has changed which I didn't hear about - we don't understand, from a scientific perspective, what NO2 does in an ICE to give it that additional boost. They started adding it in the belief that the additional O2 would be "burned" off the NO2 molecules (mostly for aircraft in thinner air) but the science doesn't show how that would produce so much extra power. So without a scientific understanding of what is going on the application is all trial and error.

I had no problem with tuning. I just got tired of the mess...and also the fact that a similar scale electric is faster and less of a hassle.

The worst part of nitro for me is when your ripping around and it stalls out of nowhere and you got to go get it.

That's what kids are for.

Same as flying gliders off a high start.
