In several decades of drinking, I’ve never had any urge or desire to drink cognac.  I mean, I have done it.  I’ve even drank Calvados, though why you’d do that twice is a mystery to me.

In general, every liquor store I’ve ever been in carries cognac and brandy, yet I think I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been in a house where they had even one bottle of cognac or brandy.  Who is buying this stuff and why?

Proof positive that targeted ads are effective. Hennessy made ads with a prominent black actor sipping their product while being cool, black folks thrive on cool. Same thing for Colt 45 and Black & Mild cigars, they eat that shit up. I wonder who did the original fried chicken ads, bet they made a killing.

Back when I, uh, knew such people...I got a bottle of homemade brandy from a couple of crazy guys up north. Mixed magnificently with Sprite. I imagine similar spirits would mix just as well.

Also, users on the local PD Facebook group have recommended baiting bear traps with Hennessy and Korbel to catch felons.

. That’s actually what inspired the question.  I had been making it half-whiskey, half-rum; but this year I decided to try to follow the recipe exactly to see if it made a difference.

I like a certain cognac.  It's half the price of Hennessy but amazing.   I've yet to return to the scene of discovery to ask what the fuck it was.   The legend may not live up to the hype.  Safe thread.

Cognac isn't meant to be guzzled, which is why it's served as a small quantity in a snifter.

It also pairs well with an after dinner cigar if you're into that.

Without reinforcing any stereotypes, when I went to buy the cognac for the Alton Brown egg nog recipe, I looked on the shelves for about 15 minutes and couldn’t find any.  It was all behind the counter at the cash register as it turns out.

If you are going to question the drinking of Brandy you are insulting the entire state of Wisconsin.

Where by the way even little old ladies will out-drink you.

All of the black people I know drink Henny.

I remember a while back a black feller was telling a group of us that they also like to dip their blunts into it and then smoke them after it has dried.

I find it funny when I see it locked up in a special case in the liqueur stores that happen to have a certain demographic within driving distance.

That’s what the guy at the French restaurant told me about Calvados.  I agree.  Lighter fluid is not meant to be guzzled.  I’m skeptical about pairing it with flammable items though.

I was at a liquor store a couple of weeks ago that had a bottle of Highland Park scotch locked up in a case. $4,995 for that bottle. A 750ml.

Highland Park is decent but wtf?

Yeah, I should have started in July so it would have time to age.  Did you do the meringue with the egg whites version (the Alton Brown recipe on Food Network) or the no egg white version on the Alton Brown website?

Hennessy is a cognac which is just brandy made in the Cognac region of France and adhering to the established standards of French law.

The distinction is that cognac is made to a higher standard than other "lesser" brandies.

Purchased one of the better bottles of Hennessey one time, and don't remember who I ended up giving it to. Otherwise it was going to be thrown away. I do however, always keep a bottle of Metaxa on hand.
