So I wound up with a web belt, suspenders, canteen, and M16 mag pouch that I can keep.
This will be in addition to three other M16 mag pouches and two medium ruck sacks. So does anyone still use this or is it now pretty much antique? |

I still have my original setup from when security forces was still using it back in the early 2000s. It would work fine, but it's kind of a pain to use with armor. But it still carries stuff fine. I also still have one of the older "assault vests" that we were issued with the angled magazine pouches on the front.

Do any surplus places still sell large Alice frame packs? (or a foreign military equivalent worth a darn?).
The ammo pouches are awesome, works well with both 5.56mm and 7.62x51mm magazines.

Bug out gear? I'm going to look like I got lost coming home from the tennis court. Tacticool is going to get you one giant target plastered on your face.

I don't play tactical Timmy. During a situation like that why would I want everyone seeing me in a full load out with molle shit hanging all over the place? I'd prefer to blend in with the masses if I'm to be stuck around them until I can then unass and get to a safer location with less people and or threats around.

I prefer for my gear to not scream "I HAVE A GUN" so no. I don't have a tacticool bag.

Quoted: I still use older gear, mainly because it's affordable while still being serviceable. Heck, some pouches these days go for almost as much as I paid for my entire setup. I need to put together a set for ARs, now that I have them, as I only have a set for my FAL. I also have other gear that's serviceable for lighter or mag-only setups, like an M1956 belt and suspender set with some Greek or Portuguese mag pouches, or a Portuguese 7.62X51mm BAR belt set, or M1956-style Garand pouches for use with my FAL in CA (where charger-loading is a must). I have some ALICE gear for M-16s, but I prefer other pouches for 5.56, and H-suspenders over the Y-suspenders. This is my primary LBE set for the FAL. It's a mix of ALICE, M1967, USMC M1961, M1956, Canadian Pattern 82, and more modern, commercial gear. I've made a couple of small changes. Still need to get an IFAK for it, which will cost significantly more than the rest of the LBE put together. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47975906582_d134a65ee8_b.jpg I don' have this set up right now, but this is something I just threw together for a simple rig a while back. I have a set of M1956 suspenders now that I'd prefer over the ALICE ones for this sort of thing. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48100977933_64ccd785b1_b.jpg Bandolier I improvised using those pouches and an ALICE equipment strap, which I'll throw in the truck with my FAL for road trips. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48104337208_6cc84fa61a_b.jpg LBE set I put together for a tactical match here in CA for which I used my FAL, which required me to use chargers. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48805926012_afaee465d8_b.jpg View Quote I wish I had a stripper clip dust cover for my FAL |

I use ALICE for deer hunting and my wife's BOB bag is a large ALICE pack.
My ALICE gear was issued to me, modified by me (at the direction of my squad leader) and is still in my possession as I had to buy new shit to turn in when I ETS'd.
Still works just fine too. Only wish my RO soled Panama jungle boots were still in wearable condition but i wore those out long ago. |
I have a large Alice pack and LBE with mag pouches. It all worked well for me 30 plus years ago so I figure if I needed to use it, it will work again.
My first choice would be to blend in though. |

Minty medium ALICE with upgraded straps, but I'm only a hack.
$40 well spent! |
ALICE can still be viable for a woodland/jungle dismounted environment especially when it is hot and humid and you are not likely to be pressing an attack where body armor would be a bigger thing. So in other words if SHTF and you are going on a foot patrol (not purposely to contact) or a stealthy recce where speed and stealth are more important than rolling in hard and kicking doors or working in an urban environment.

Yes, multiple sets for various purposes.
There's a big thread in the gear section. https://www.ar15.com/forums/Armory/ALICE-Gear-Setups/10-214382/ |

Me. Tried armor, chest rigs, tac vests, range belts, and didn’t like any of them. Used a set of M1956 gear for ~6 months because I collected before getting into guns/preparedness.
Started using LC-2 about 2 years ago and until recently it was still a work in progress. After a 3-day course off-grid in NC, I think I have it pretty well dialed in. 2 canteens, 4 ammo pouches, buttpack, compass pouch, bayonet, knife on shoulder strap. Carry my pistol in a tanker holster and it’s GTG. |
I still have a early 80s ALICE gear set up, doubt it fits after all this time.
But damn I seldom actually pulled guard duty. |

Why get something newer and costly? |

Seems to be OK if you need cheap and fairly light LBE. It's a pain to incorporate or feel comfortable wearing with vests/armor so if you want to use armor just jump on the molle train.
For those thinking of a SHTF scenario, you are still going to stick out wearing alice. |

M1910 gear user here. When I feel like being a tad more modern, I use my M1956 gear.

Nothing wrong with ALICE if it is what you have. To put it in perspective- I've been deployed to places where the local help showed up with rifles and all their ammo and chow for the day packed into a plastic grocery store bag. So you could do much worse. |

I threw away a bunch of that type of stuff recently, it was liberating.

Man, I hope I don’t get whacked by some dude with 40+ year old gear after the SHTF. That would be embarrassing.
I still use Woodland Camo BDU's as well. Fuck all this new Tacticool shit, the 80's gear is where it's at.
Yep, and it packs out deer and elk better than anything else I've seen.
It’s what I’m accustomed to, so yeah.
With all my ailments, I’d probably die in the first skirmish. |

Bug out to where? this country is fucked... Your not gonna just hike your way into canada or me-he-co dressed up like some tactical timmy.. Fuck it sell that shit and by ammo, concrete and bitcoin... bug out gear was cool back when obama was pres, and we had a chance... Its over bud... You need bunkers, ammo, food, and something other than the US dollar...

Alice gear is just a old school battle belt with suspenders, change my mind!
I've got a hellcat variable. Large ALICE and frame with MOLLE straps and accessories.
I have a bunch of sets to go with spare ARs. No point in having a fighting rifle if you don't have the gear to tote mags, bayonet, water, medical, etc with it. Plus, I am a bit odd.
