Are you using Estes Ignitors?
It might be shitty Estes Ignitors and not a shitty Estes Controller.

Back when I messed with them (early 60s) we would shove a length of canon fuse up the tail pipe, light it, and run.
God those were fun.

The AA batteries in the Estes controller don't last long. Using a 12v battery will make a big difference. Also having a nicer launch pad will help with heavier models. If you are handy, making your own would be cost effective. Here are a couple links for some ideas.

I have a Aerotech Mantis, but have been blasting rockets off of it for a few years and is getting a little worn out. Also the hollow aluminum rod causes a lot of whip with heavier rockets. Gonna order a new one from Knights Manufacturing, solid and affordable. They have pads for low up to high power.
