So my wife wants a new Ipad. I think i bought her a Gen 2 or whatever who knows how many years ago. Not an apple guy.
She just wants to surf the internet mostly. Should I get the 9th gen with 256GB or the latest gen with 64Gb? Is the newer Ipad's heavy? Should I be looking into the Ipad Air? Not really looking to spend over $500 on one. I know the 9th gen uses the same phone connection she has now, but looks like the new ones take a different connection USB C or whatever my Samsung phone takes. Phones are 2.5 years old, so not sure we are replacing them anytime soon. Thanks |

Newer iPad with less memory. If she stores THAT much…it’s cheaper to do it through the cloud for a year or two.

I'd recommend a mini. Same form factor as a paperback book, or a Kindle. There's good reason that size was standardized for human reading convenience long before the advent of electricity.

For web surfing at home I would recommend just the 10th generation IPad. It has a 10.9 inch screen which is about as large as you can get unless you get the 12.9minch Pro, but that is quite a bit more expensive.
Watch for sales also. Meijer (if you live in Midwest) , target, even Amazon have discounts right now. |

I'd recommend the current 5th gen iPad Air.
I know it's $650, but it will be useable and last at least 5 years. It weighs 1lb, has a large, clear screen and great battery life, is very fast, USB charger. The Mini is too small, and both the Mini and iPad are A15 processors, while the Air is an M1. Nothing wrong with either of them if you want to go that route. If so, I'd pick the latest 10th gen iPad over the Mini for $350 right now on sale. It weighs a few ounces more and slightly larger than the Air, it'll still last as long, but I view it as you're paying $300 extra with the Air for a bit more comfort and longevity. The 10th gen iPad will likely start feeling sluggish in 3 years while the Air will keep working well. Just my opinion, not facts. Both are great choices and she'll appreciate either one, you can't go wrong. $350 for the 10th gen iPad is a great deal, $650 for the Air is a great tablet. Both do the same thing essentially, the Air is more futureproof and slightly more premium, but with the $300 savings by getting a 10th gen iPad you can buy an even better iPad in 2 years for $650. |

I'd highly recommend the 10th gen ipad for $350 on sale now over the 9th gen. Although the 9th gen is very good as well, I believe it's the A14 chip and should last and perform faithfully for 3 years or so at least before showing it's age. The 10th gen most important upgrade is the improved screen and since that is what you look at, it really is worth the price. With everything though, it's what you can/should afford/need/desire, so please don't take my opinions as shaming or elitist or anything. It's all pros/cons, needs/wants, and what you're comfortable with. All Apple stuff is highly functional and you can't go wrong since they support it for a long time, and the 3rd party software developers do a great job of supporting the ecosystem. That's why they're all a good buy and you can't go wrong. |

My wife loves her iPad mini (5th gen, 64 gig).
She surfs the web, looks at facebook, watches videos, texting, and a few games and such. Still has 30 gig free on it. She hates even having to hold my iPad (iPad Air 2 32 gig), says it is just too big and heavy. And yes, I still use my 9 year old iPad (mainly for playing a few games and scripture study). I hate surfing the web on it. |

I got the iPad 10 256GB in January and love it. I rarely open my laptop anymore. Here are some inexpensive accessories to make iPad better.
The keyboard cases are stupid expensive. This Logitech Bluetooth keyboard is awesome. https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/keyboards/k380-multi-device.html Bluetooth mouse meant for iPad. Yes, a mouse for iPad. https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/ipad-accessories/pebble-i345-portable-wireless-mouse.html Logitech Crayon stylus. Better than Apple Pencil, IMO. And cheaper. Make sure to get the USB-C one. https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/ipad-accessories/ipad-digital-pencil-crayon.html Plus get her a case, with a cover that folds back to hold iPad upright when watching videos. ETA: Agree with less memory to get a newer model. |

I had a full size for years. When it came time to upgrade I went with a mini. Totally happy with my purchase. The miniform factor is way more comfortable & convenient than the full size

I recently was given a 9th gen ipad. It is really nice. I doubt she needs more than that. Unless she is really looking for a laptop replacement. Not saying get a 9th gen but no need to get a top of the line one.

the Pro models historically get the new iOS every year many years after the non Pro models.
iOS older than one year (current is 17, last year is 16) are not secure and not useful any more, so that sets a useful lifespan. For reference, the iPad Pro models introduced in 2015? just aged out. iPad standard models age out roughly similar to iPhone models. 4-6 years. do not get a base model (minimum storage size). what do I know? I just work on these for a living. |

Most people I know use their iPads at home (or maybe while traveling) and the wifi version is fine. You can always use your phone for a hotspot if needed. |

Before you get a regular iPad, find a way to look at an iPad Air. For me, the display on the Air is much nicer to use and read with. It has an anti-reflective coating that I think is worth the extra price. It also supports the wireless use of the Apple Pencil which is very convenient. Look at that too. It might seem like something she doesn't need, but you might be surprised if you advent looked at the technology before.
Also, I don't know if you have kids, but I find myself looking at and editing a lot of family photos on the iPad. I thought it would be more of a media content thing, but I ended up doing more than expected and was glad I had bumped up to the Air. I was a lonnngggg time mini-user and thought the Air would be too big but is turned out to be a pretty comfortable size for doing just about everything well. |

I received my new IPad 10th Gen yesterday. 64 Gb. It sure was nice to be able to just transfer everything over from my old iPad to this new one during setup. My old 8th gen worked fine, but the screen was spider webbed bad. Had it for five years(?) and it worked fine. It too was 64 Gb and with all the pics, emails, etc, I still had more than half the space left.
$349.99 at Costco. I just checked and they were out of stock. |
