Walmart has Xmas tree display up along with wrapping paper and lights as of last monday.

Did it used to start this early or have I turned into the old man yelling at clouds?

Black Friday.

One of our kids was born Thanksgiving weekend one year (so not necessarily before or after Thanksgiving each year), so I instituted a rule that we do not decorate for Christmas until after her party.

Our stuff is usually up until Presidents Day because we're too lazy to take it down.

When I was a kid in the 70's it was after thanksgiving, now they just go for the cash grab as early as possible.

Now Christmas stuff starts showing up on Costco shelves in July.

As I remember when I was a tender and callow fellow, the local Western Auto store started laying out the electic trains, bicycles, .22 rifles, and decorations a few days before Thanksgiving.

ETA: Remember when bubble lights first came out, on a series string where if one burned out, they all went out, and how much of a PITA it was to find the bad bulb?

After Thanksgiving if you were really excited about it.

Santa makes an appearance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC, which is sort of the official kick-off to the Christmas.  However, a more conservative individual would allow a sufficient buffer for the Thanksgiving holiday observance and not put up Christmas Decorations until December 1.  I think any decent human being is going to take down the Christmas decorations after New Years day at the first opportunity.

Saw the start of Halloween and Christmas stuff in Costco July of this year. I think the supply chain mess is screwing with most of these retailers timing...

The official kick off to the Christmas season used to be when Santa brought up the rear of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Now it's anytime after Labor Day.

Depends on inflation/deflation and corporate mind set. You need to remember the prime reason for XMASS, "Gentlemen, we just need 10% more this year, we need to apply ourselves, I know we can do it...."

Both my wife's and my Christmas shopping was completed some time back. We don't give many gifts, and whenever we find something we think a friend would like, we pick it up. Heck, it may even be in January or February.

Officially for Catholics - the beginning of Advent.  Anyway, that works out kind of to the first Sunday after Thanksgiving.  Then marketing stretched it to Black Friday.  Anyway, for a lot of Catholic families - the family was home for Thanksgiving, so the decorations were already coming out Friday and were fully up by Sunday.  My father was not Catholic, so we went hunting till Sunday, so we generally decorated late.

MN here. We invented the mall, we have the largest one. July 15th is when the decorations would come out. About ten years ago they retreated from that and now bring them out on like September 1st.

Fucking commies got their way.

Me too, and this is bullshit.

When did your Sears catalog arrive? Cuz that’s when kids started thinking about Christmas, and when your parents started buying presents.

To me, the day after Thanksgiving is close enough for the madness.

Last year I tried to get halloween candy on October 29 at Target.  When I went to the seasonal section, they were clearing it out for Christmas stuff.

On October 29.

Maybe I'm the old man yelling at clouds, but this shit drives me insane.  Makes me not want to buy seasonal stuff from them.

Kind of…

Stores used to be a lot smaller, square footage wise. A Walmart super center is 200,000+ sq feet. As seasonal items, like space consuming lawn and garden, go out of season, retails fill it with next season’s stuff.

The other option is keeping empty shelves just so the “Christmas stuff is out already” whiners can be placated. But no serious retailer with shelf space available would do that.

The day after Thanksgiving. Back then we even had specific Thanksgiving decorations that got put up. Paper turkeys and pilgrims. There were distinct lead ins to each holiday and far more excitement for all of them.
