Heading to Indiana next week (Valparaiso, to be precise) for work. Anything interesting around there? Good places to eat? Or should I hang out in Gary, as was recommended to me by a coworker?

The dunes are cool. Too cold to swim, but I wouldn't swim in that water anyway. The dunes are great for hiking.
I live in the far southeast corner so I don't know that area very well. |

Gary, Indiana |

Heh...mostly replies from Texans. I mean, I know Texans think they know EVERYTHING, but do y’all really know that much about Indiana? If so, why?

Don't recall where Valparaiso is, but the Auburn-Cord-Deusenberg museum is probably the best thing in the whole state.
|

How much down time do you have? Indy is a pretty decent city and not too far of a drive from valpo. Leaves are starting to change so dall foliage may be worth a drive. I'm South Central so not immediately familiar with Valpo but you aren't that far from Chicago.

I lived in southern Indiana for 4 years. The fried chicken at "The Chicken Place"
is the best the planet offers...it is in Ireland, IN. The caves are cool to visit too in the south. Sorry I can't actually be helpful. But if for some reason you are on I64 in southern Indiana...make time for the Chicken Place. Chicken from a farm down the road...fresh...fried in lard by German grandmothers when I went there. Yes, I have the tee shirts and have been back multiple times...BEST FRIED CHICKEN ON THE PLANET! |

Surprisingly, yes. Contrary to common knowledge, it's not all flatland and cornfields. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

Indianapolis has the War Memorial. Lotsa awesome stuff if you like military history. Upstairs has a huge Civil War exhibit. Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers, IN is like a Colonial Williamsburg but concentrate on 19th Century America.
Up north is Tippecanoe Battlefield. Vincennes in the SW has the George Rogers Clark Memorial. There is a historic site in town with lotsa old buildings that are open to the public. It is there that I learned that newspapers used to plagiarize other papers. There is also a privately owned military museum there too with WW II tanks & aircraft. https://indymilitary.com/ There's also a palisade wood fort in IN across the river from Paducah, KY. Can't remember its name though. If you're into blackpowder, go to Friendship, IN, home of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Small museum there. |

Copper Custom's is in Valpo. Great store with a great selection!

RV museum in Elkhart isn't that close to Valpo but it is a lot closer than many of the other suggestions in this thread.

Valpo is a nice town. Tons of great food - pretty much anywhere downtown is good.
If you get a nice day, the National Lake Shore and Indiana Dunes State Park are only 20 mins north. It's a pretty cool park with some interesting trails, and of course, the beach. |

Merriville should have plenty of things to do but I don’t have specifics. Gary only if you are feeling sporty and wanted to get mugged. Michigan City has a big outlet mall so you could get your Christmas shopping done early. as mentioned earlier, Custom Copper armament has some fun things to look at and waste some time. |

Shit in the holy Ganges!
Oh wait, "...na". Meh. Same difference. |

Valpo is nice. Go downtown and you'll find plenty of good restaurants. Or go to Kelsey's on the outskirts for great steak. Wagner's in Chesterton is good too. Ate there tonite. Blythe's is the local gun shop/range on the north end of town. We have 3 micro breweries as well. Not a whole lot of things to do here, leaves are changing if your into that. Merriville is 15 mins to the west and has the area malls and more restaurants, Sam's, Costco, ect. The Dunes are pretty cool, but too cold to do much there. Definatly stay of Gary, although there is a great restaurant - Flamingo Pizza, for perch, shrimp or steak in Miller - edge of Gary. Chicago is an hour away. Most of the surrounding towns have good eateries. Go to Duffy's tavern or Franklin House if you like hole in the wall bars/live music and don 't mind smoke. Lots of bars and restaurants, you'll eat well.

I did some road trips with my Dad when I was a kid that involved going through Gary. We slept in the van in a KMart parking lot instead of getting a room. We ate at White Castle. It was kind of like a safari I suppose. I remember him telling me to lock the doors as we drove into town. I was like, are your serious Clark? I have no desire to go back, but it was educational.

You'll be about 45 mins away from 3 Floyds Brewpub.
I grew up in Lafayette. I don't really recommend it other than Purdue University and eating at Arnis & Pizza King. Indy also has some great breweries. |

I grew up in NW IN and lived there for 29 years. You can get in trouble if you want. I don't know what you like. I was going to suggest checking out the Star Plaza Theater website for upcoming concerts, but it seems they've closed. I saw Emerson, Lake (not Palmer) not too long ago there. It looks like they closed shortly thereafter. (And Emerson and Lake both died shortly thereafter, so RIP EL). I live in MI now but still travel to NW Indiana often since my family is there.
If you want to find good places to drink, sorry I can't help you. If you have specific interests, let me know. Traffic sucks, although out in Valpo it shouldn't be bad. As someone said, there is the Dunes. Swimming is out, but if you like to hike you can do that. If you are stupid and brave like me, you can take your car onto the hiking trails. The trick is not getting arrested and thrown in jail. |

Go get a cheese burger at shoops. Then go to four fathers brewery.

Skip that noise and head to Gary, Indiana to enjoy the culture

Born and raised there in south bend and joined the military at 17 to get away from it. The east race in south bend is nice I guess, Most of the state is pretty much a shithole now. Nothing interesting, it’s kind of like Napoleon dynamite where everyone is 20 years behind current events.

Visit The Flashlight Outlet.
I wouldn't say it's an activity, but if you like flashlights, weapon lights, utility lights, unusual lights, specialty lights, or Pelican cases, you owe it to yourself to stop in. It's on US30, just West of town, South side of the road. I stop in once or twice each year going back and forth to Wisconsin. The guy behind the counter owns the place, knows all the products he sells, and is not a douchebag. |

3 Floyd's,
Notre Dame, Copper customs, fishing charter out of burns harbor, I think the steelhead may be still biting. Studebaker national museum Hesston steam museum |
