I know nothing about revolvers, never had one before but got this for 5 boxes of 5.56.

Dunno what the ammo price is locally, but this pistol looked like it was worth the $10 in ammo that walked out the door in exchange for it.

Was sitting in my buddies safe and needs re blued. Weighing if I should do it myself or send it to someone.

It's the Ruger revolver model before the GP-100 series. Usually a very solid revolver.

Thought it was a marketing name until I looked it up...just thought it looked like a classic and liked how they had a reference to 1776 on the frame.

Looks like I am SOL for ammo until I can get components to roll own.

Solid shooter, heavy action and nothing you do will ever really lighten it up.

That's an early SN gun, so you are stuck with the factory grips or having a custom set made.

Other than that, get a holster and get to shooting!

id shoot it first. if you find someone to do the bluing for another 5 boxes of 5.56, do it, if not, just get new grips and shoot the snot of out of it. it will be great!

It's a Security 6 made in 1976 that somebody didn't take good care of. I have one with the same barrel length but in stainless steel. Trigger isn't as nice as old S&W guns but they are built like a tank. Mine was my 16th birthday present as my dad figured that since his tax dollars paid for those school buses it only made since I get his money's worth riding it. I shot the shit out of it over the years.

Clean it and shoot it if you can find ammo.

Personally, I love beat up guns like yours, because I don't feel bad taking them camping, hunting, or fishing. My personal favorite has the previous owner's numbers engraved all over it, including a few areas that were started and then scratched out.

There's nothing I can do to it to make it any more ugly, so I don't baby it by any means, but that gun sure can shoot!

I don't think I'd even reblue it.  It has character, and nothing you do will ever increase the value of the gun.

As it sits, it's about a $200 gun.  Reblue it and it'll still be a $200 gun since it was refinished - but it won't have any of the character.

I'd clean the duct tape residue off of the grips and oil the gun really well, and just have a nice, solid 4" .357 revolver.

Its a good solid revolver and the precursor to the GP100. It is not quite as robust as a GP100, but it can handle a moderate diet of magnums as long as you dont go with crazy hot loads. Think of it as Ruger's "K" frame like a Model 19. It uses a similar construction to the GP100, and you can easily swap out broken parts like the hammer axis pin or trigger module(if they ever break).

They made the same basic gun under three names: (Police) Service Six, Speed Six and Security Six. I've got the 2 3/4" snubby version of the Police Service Six.

In that condition, it's a $200 gun. Maybe $250.

The one in my post was a $325 gun 2 or 3 years ago, and it was normally priced for my area.

The rust spots, missing bluing, the goo on the grips - OPs revolver is a 60ish% gun.

In the market we are in right now, it is closer to a $400 gun than a $200 gun.

What you paid a couple years ago is completely irrelevant.

I picked up one awhile back using Cabela’s points. Literally used $139 in points for it.

Mines in pretty decent shape, a round butt but 38spl only. Keep it loaded up in the glovebox.

.357 built like a tank. I have one. Snub nose 155 prefix. I've had it 35 or 40 years and it's worth more to me than anyone else.

It's had the original small stocks on it, a set of ugly rubber Pacs and now has the Ruger Target style grips which I prefer.

Yea some CLP took the rust off and apart from the grips I like it. Didn’t think the store would have ammo but they did. Can’t wait to try it out. I didn’t even know they loaded 180gr in 357 but I ordered a thousand 158gr hard cast to try out.

I picked up some 20+ year old PMC the other week for 2.50 a box, psp stuff was mostly junk but the 193 clone was in great shape, traded the m193 stuff for this, so about $12.50 for the pistol and $165 for 8 boxes, am in it 177.50. Perks of stocking up on ammo before it gets scarce I guess.
