Duct tape? oops, already taken. Keep in mind at night the moon is on the other side of the earth, so it's gravity exerts a pull downward. If lying on one's back, this then is the explanation. Moon gravity pulls the eyelids closed.

Also, why do we call them lids? That is sort of strange.

If eyes closed were the state of rest, you wouldn't have to do that dramatic hand-sweep thing to close a deceased person's eyes when they pass.
