This is mostly a shitposting thread.

But in NC where I grew up, “BBQ” means one thing: slow smoked and pulled/chopped whole hog.

It’s not a verb, it’s not a grill, and it’s not brisket or jalapeño sausage (Both of which I admittedly love).

Back in the olden days, round these parts, it simply meant cooking on the grill.

We've evolved to understand that it means slow and low.

I was once in this weird town in Wisconsin where they used "barbecue" to refer to sloppy Joe's.

I take it to mean low and slow smoking.
Burgers and hot dogs are grilling, not bbq.

It originally was slow cooking whole hogs and came from the Caribbean, barbacoa...cooking method of buccaneers.

Here it’s anything barbecued but mainly brisket.

OP FTW.

I've been to barbecues, expecting dry rubbed, smoked, chicken or ribs or something slathered with BBQ sauce. Only to be disappointed with hamburgers and hotdogs.

Im from Virginia Beach.

BBQ/Barbeque meant two things.

1) An outdoor cookout basically, even if its just hamburgers and hot dogs; "Hey i'm having a BBQ this weekend, want to come over?"
2) Pulled pork sandwiches mixed with BBQ sauce; "Lets get some BBQ sandwiches for lunch."

A slow-cooked and smoked meat, usually pork.  If it's not pork, you need to specify what it is (barbecued chicken or barbecued brisket).  If you don't, most people are going to assume pork.

A gathering of people for outdoor cooking is grilling out or a cookout.

A device for cooking food outdoors is a grill or a smoker.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area.

"Let's eat BBQ" means slow smoked ribs, brisket, pork butt, etc.

"Lets eat Santa Maria BBQ", means Tri Tip cooked med rare over a wood or charcoal fire.

"Come on over for A BBQ" means we're cooking food on a grill, but not BBQ.

"Look at my new BBQ" means a charcoal or gas grill, but not something you'd cook BBQ in.

People from other parts of the country hear those last two and think it mean that people in CA think that hot dogs are BBQ . . . but they don't.

Low, slow, smoked cooked meat over hickory, oak, pecan, other fruitwoods, and mesquite for those that can tolerate it.

Usually brisket, but this applies to any beef, and pork, deer, etc....

That's what Texans mean when they say BBQ.

I'm at least 1/3rd Texan from all the years I lived there, cooked  including visiting family who live there!

The best smoked bbq I ever had was in the Texas central hill country.

We were served what they told us was a smoked pig hindquarter, that was awesome.

I kept tasting more morsels.  I found out it was a deer hindquarter!

Their pitmaster did a great job for their customers.

Below ground pits, covered in heavy steel plate and smoked overnight.

Sadly, all of the above.

The absolute worst is the tendency of the older crowd (60's and older) to refer to sloppy joes as BBQ. The absolute worst was going to a church event where we were told there would be BBQ, and finding it was crock pot sloppy joes loaded with celery, on plain white hamburger buns. Haven't had the opportunity yet but I swore that day that I would provide proper BBQ pulled pork from my smoker for a future church picnic.

Barbecue has many meanings. All are right in their own way.

The only thing that is pants on head retarded is spelling it "barbeque." That is unforgivable.

You are talking "BBQ" vs say..."I'm going to a BBQ"....which is another way of saying "cookout"...which means cooking something on a grill.

Cookout is the party associated with grilling or smoking.  BBQ means a style of food (not a specific meat). We refer to it as grilling when cooking stuff on the grill, dogs and burgers, etc, and smoking when we cook low and slow, brisket, pork butt, etc.

BBQ is smoked, pulled pork. We don’t say things like we are “going to bbq” this evening. We say “we are grilling”. We don’t go to a bbq, we go to a cookout.

In NE Montana?

Any meat slathered with Hunt's hickory BBQ sauce after being baked, boiled, grilled, or pan fried.

Optionally, little smokies in the crock pot with grape jelly.

There are a few folks who smoke meat, but they are pretty quiet about it.
