Well? I've been using Sir Hare Shave Soap from Amazon and have had pretty good results, but it is all i've tried so far.
Proraso good? |
|
Proraso is a popular, and deservedly so, cream. Bigelow's is comparable. Good for the price. My go to is a soap (Mitchell's Wool Fat).
You'll notice that the more expensive soaps and creams actually pretty much deserve the premium $. Generally thicker, creamier with upscale scents. A little will go a long way. Are you just getting into it? eta, as I recall Proraso also makes a creamy soap in a round plastic tub. The scents are the same. The soap will take a little more work. |
|
Mitchell’s Wool Fat. Before that was Tabac.
They last so long you light as well spend a little extra for the good stuff. |
|
I travel for a living, and I've tried all kinds of British, French and Italian soaps.
Mitchells Wool Fat is probably my favorite. But these silly-looking Turkish "Arko" sticks are right up there. Great lather, lemony scent, and they are a remarkable bargain: https://www.amazon.com/Arko-Shaving-Soap-Stick-White/dp/B07DKHX8QP/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_194_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8W5APW9SCKDQA77Z5RTV |

I splash some water on my face and run the razor under water. If the razor isn’t quite as new, I might get some lather from my bar of soap. I think it’s Lever 2000. Am I supposed to do something else?
|
|
most of the time it is just a bar of real good moisturizing soap.
I do use some lucky tiger shaving cream. It is quite good on my face, and just a dab will do the job. |
|
Prorasso, Bigelow, Tabac. Make my own pre-shave oil using grape seed oil as the base, add jojoba aloe, eucalyptus, Sandalwood, and a few other fragrances. The pre-shave oil makes a huge difference in reducing shaving bumps and irritation.

I have used Mitchell's Wool Fat, D R Harris, Cella, Tabac, Phoenix and Beau, Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream, Soap Smooth, Barrister and Mann, Stirling Soap Co., The Sudsy Soapery, Through the Fire Fine Craft, Local Gent Shaving Co., Captain's Choice, Col. Conk and Van Der Hagen.
I will not buy any more of Taylor of Old Bond Street, Captain's Choice, Col. Conk or Van Der Hagen because the disappointing performance. Although it a good soap I won't buy any more Tabac because the scent smells awful to me. Local Gent (which I think is out of business), Phoenix and Beau and Through the Fire Fine Craft are good but not great soaps (will not buy any more). Cella is a really good soap but I probably will not purchase any more because there are other soaps I like more. I like Soap Smooth but I think they might be out of business. I would not hesitate to buy Barrister and Mann, Stirling Soap Co., The Sudsy Soapery, Mitchell's Wool Fat or D R Harris again as they are all really good performers. I would have to say that D R Harris is still my favorite as of right now (I have other soaps that I haven't tried yet waiting to get into the rotation). |

I started with Proraso Green Cream. It is good but I am spoiled by Stirling and their varieties. A good one from Amazon would be The Well Groomed Man soap. 4oz for $10 and it will work with no problems. It has a faint barbershop scent but I usually pair it up with some Clubman Original. Nice post shave with good slickness.
Back to Stirling, great value and an assortment of scents. Great lather and slickness with not much work. I do enjoy their balms. As always, YMMV. Especially with blades. Had a good run with Voskhod but today (well yesterday) I had a bad shave with one. Maybe it was a dud. |

A word on Mitchell's; it's not expensive. It's actually pretty inexpensive considering how long it lasts. The problem with it for someone starting out is it's a b*tch to get the right lather untill you've worked with it for a while (don't give up). The brush really needs to be loaded. Not too much nor too little water...
I use it a lot for cold water shaves during the summers. |

I have Proraso and Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood. I prefer the Taylor of Old Bond Street.

|
Mitchells Wool Fat, Poraso, Stirling, Mike Natural Soaps, Barrister and Mann, West Coast Shaving, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Halslinger Schafmilch, Caties Bubbles, Oleo Soapworks, Kells Original, and several Italian Barber brands. All of these are great soaps, but a few I really like.
Poraso is great soap and I use the kind in the white tub. Its great soap for the price. My top five soaps. 1. Mikes Natural Soaps 2. Stirling 3. Caties Bubbles 4. Halslinger 5. XXX from Italian Barber |

Since switching over to DE shaving I’ve only tried Stirling Soaps. Currently using Mountain Man, Island Man, Gatlinburg, and Ozark Mountain.

Stirling.
Been using it for the past 6+ years, back when he was still making and selling it out of his house. |

Just started using cetaphil gentle skin cleanser to shave after an epiphany a month back. Works extremely well.

Just got some soap from someone on this board. First impressions are good so far.

Palmolive classic shave stick, it's cheap, but I love it. $2.89 on Amazon, even less on Ebay.

|
Top soaps that I reach for are Stirling, Proraso, Razorock what the puck and Italian Barber Amici.
|
|
Murphy and McNeil
Ariana and Evans Barrister and Mann Stirling Of the soaps I've used, those are the top 4. I've also used proraso (soap and cream, cream is a bit better), captains choice (it's alright), chiseled face (it's alright, love ghost town barber scent), tobs (meh), and maggard's house brand (don't remember, it was a sample) |
|
I've got more Stirling shave soap than Stirling does.
Also, Long Rifle shave soaps are great. Have some others like Proraso red and a few Razorock/Italian Barber soaps too. Of those, Amici is my favorite. |
|
|
Proraso White or Red. I like the white because I have sensitive skin, but the red works better for my coarse beard hair. When I am traveling, I use Classic Shaving 2.5 inch soaps because it fits in my travel soap container.
