My brother wants to put an SSD in his Dell Inspirion Laptop (business computer - no gaming )  He'd like a 1TB at a minimum.

I've put in a couple Samsung 840 / 850's in the past but I haven't dabbled with SSD's for a couple years.   I don't really know much about the latest and best.

He has a 2 TB external HDD backup drive.

The Crucial website scanned his system and gave him an option of 2 crucial drives - one was 250 GB the other was a 500GB, they didn't have a 1 TB option.

Samsung is still a great go to. I have an 850 EVO in one machine, an 850 PRO in another. They've been great

Samsung, or Intel.

Samsung is more bang for the buck.

Thanks I told him to go with the 1TB 860 Pro and a 3-1/2" docking station / mount adaptor.

Crucial or Samsung have both served me well.

Samsung for best all around in perf, cost, and capacity.

Adata or Micron/Crucial for average performance at the lowest price/Gb.

Edit- AnandTech SSD RoundUp

Samsung.

EVO is better then most other SSD's, PRO is the best there is.

Samsung has excellent migration SW, makes it a piece of cake.

ADATA SU800
Crucial MX500
Samsung Evo 860
Toshiba TR200
Western Digital Blue

They are all 2.5” SSDs.

I prefer Crucial and Samsung. They both have healthy TBW lifetime ratings, and great warranties (and utility software).

I'm pretty sure Samsung is the gold standard for now.

Intel's optane and optane accessory are just too pricey for the average Joe.

What model laptop?  If it will take NVMe then its faster than an SSD.

That assumes he has a reasonably new laptop with an accessible M.2 slot that supports NVMe. Crucial does make a 1 TB NVMe SSD. The fact that the Crucial websearch didn't show it suggests that his laptop doesn't support that form factor.

Otherwise, you're right that an NVMe SSD is much faster than one running through the SATA interface (which maxes out around 550 Megabytes/sec).

I put a 1TB Samsung in my new laptop a few weeks ago.

My bad, I thought you were asking about STDs.

I was gonna suggest M.2 and I re-read what you were asking OP.

Samsung 1TB SSD is what I use, that's my boot drive for my desktop. Hasn't failed me after 2 years with maintenance. Reasonably priced.

Can't go wrong with Samsung... 860 Pro for Sata or 970 Pro for NVMe.
