It's cliche, but the only melee weapon I have any sort of training is, is a sword.

so probably some sort of arming sword. Something thinner profile than a 13th-14th century design. But not a rapier.

I couldn't stomach the weeb shit enough to carry a katana, even though that are excellent designs.

Probably something like this with a dagger

For some reason my mind went "EDC"

if I was going to war, I would add a spear/shield to the above.

Hopefully, The Red Viper would be my champion.  If I have to slug it out fair and square I choose an eight foot 3/8” chain.

I'm surprised how often these pop up as a favored option.

The "real" 18th-19th century assegai are flimsy, poorly designed, poorly executed spears.  The hafts are thin and weak, and the blades are so thin and shitty it can hardly be considered a hewing spear.

As a weapon, they are 2000 years behind the times.  In defense of southern Africans, however, that does make it one of their more advanced items.

Does the person I am fighting have to use the same weapon, or do they get to choose what they want?  Also, do I get to know ahead of time what they are using and their background?

Well made spear is hard to beat.

Historians say poleaxe for their ability to kill men in armor.

a halberd wouldn't do well in a tavern.  a dirk wouldn't do well in an open field.
