The mother of my children wants one for her birthday...

Family of 4.

She has agreed to retire her rice cooker once we get it.

Depends on how many you're cooking for, IMO.  Also, you will end up with more than one.  They seems to breed.

Enjoy.

The new model has a built in air fryer. I’d probably go with that.

Just get at least 6 quarts.

I live alone so I thought I should get the smallest model, 3 quarts. It's too small for one person. If your friend has a family, get the biggest one.

Oh, it's your wife. Get the biggest one with the most bells and whistles, since you'll be a direct beneficiary of it

I have the 8qt Instant Pot Duo with the air fryer lid. I still cook rice separately in my rice cooker.

I do wish I'd gotten the 10qt sometimes, though, like when my big batch of chili starts getting ready to spill over and I've got to split it into another pot on the stove. Stove chili gets eaten that night, and the 8qts that stayed in the Instant Pot get slow simmered overnight for even more goodness.

Sam the Cooking Guy’s Instant Pot short rib ragu is awesome. He has a few useful recipes.

I think we have the 6 qt Duo.

You should get the 8 qt. for a family of 4.

8 quart is the minimum I would buy for a family of 4. Stick with the Instant Pot brand! Beware of knockoffs. I have the combo with the pressure cooker lid and the air fryer lid. They are great. Perfect for me and the missus. If does a killer job on salmon and steelhead trout. If you do a lot of air frying you would probably be better served by having a separate air fryer with more capacity.

I scored a damn near NIB from Goodwill for $15 this past weekend. I was stoked because I mostly live out of hotels while I'm working and now I can save money cooking.
