Haven't seen it in a long time. It has always made me want a mini14 with one of these crappy bullpup stocks.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006842486 Lacks the under barrel shotgun but at least it has sights. And also Dizzy's boobs. ETA. Deleted spoiler. |

Does that count for a movie made in 1997?

It is based upon the book of the same title written by Robert A. Heinlein in 1959. I read the book back in the 90s before the movie came out. The book is better in my opinion but the movie is entertaining.

Made by the same guy who made Robocop . . . which explains how a serious book turned into a quirky, silly semi-comedy action flick.

The movie didn't just "kinda" suck. It sucked hairy, sweaty donkey balls. Well the director and producer wanted to use is as a social commentary that was antithetical to the actual book. Mission accomplished. |

The book and movie are both great. Don't compare the two though. They're related in title only.

I'll confess that Carmen and Amanda Tapping's Sam Carter are what taught my adolescent mind to love the female form.

Quoted: The book was great. The movie kinda sucked. View Quote The book and the movie are two different creatures. The book was about accepting duty. The movie was a shoot 'em up space opera. If you don't expect the movie to mirror the book then it sands alone as pretty good SciFi movie. I am a Heinlein fan from way back. I started reading his books back in the 1960s. I have a complete collection of his works and he has been influential in my life to be a Libertarian. I actually enjoyed the movie once I got over the fact that it wasn't going to be the book. |

I like the movie and the book, but don't consider them related in theme or plot.
I like that the book took duty seriously, and I liked that the movie had a more solid ending. The book has always felt at least a chapter short to me. |

View Quote Top Amazon review of the book. Worth a read: I first read this book years ago as a child, and in many ways it shaped my entire world view; it quite literally changed my life. I recently retired after 27 years of Naval service, and as silly as it may seem to some, this book was the foundation of my success; in military service, in the lives of countless young Sailors, and in my new role as a civilian. It shaped the character of who I was as a leader of men and women at war. Heinlein may have authored "better" books (according to the critics) but having read virtually all of them, none of the others ever quite so captured the essence of what it means to be both in military service and what those of us fortunate enough to have served all know in our hearts: the true value and moral responsibility of citizenship. |

I haven't read the book, but yeah, it's my understanding the movie is a very different story. Kind of like when they made Less Than Zero into a movie. After having read the book, the movie was unrecognizable.
