Just received a Lenovo L340.  I had been using Linux Mint for the last 5 years.  Dang,  what a change trying Win 10.  It currently has a Seagate 1 tera drive and I would like to add a m.2 ssd as a new boot drive.  I would appreciate recs on brand of drive.
Also, can I assign a new letter other than C and not wipe Win 10, but use all that space for movies, music, etc?  I would like to keep that as it arrived, so if any issues arrive should I need to send it back to Lenovo.
thanks, trog

Yes, I know all about google.  I am looking for brand advice, since the internet weighs the problems more heavily.  And I would like to leave the current drive as is, just change the letter so it would no longer be a boot drive.  That would allow me 900 gigs of storage, while allowing me to return the lap top to original configuration if I need to return for a repair.

Supposedly that some of those models have an M.2 SATA slot.  If yours does, then a Samsung EVO 850 (or 970).

If it doesn't, then you can't have both.

If you can fit another drive, you can change the boot sequence in bios. When it boots the boot drive gets the first drive letter. (C)
the old drive will get the next letter.

Samsung 860 EVO if your board requires SATA.

Go Samsung 9XX EVO if your board has a M.2 slot.

Crucial and Western Digital also make good SSDs that are a bit cheaper than Samsungs

I can not tell if that laptop has an internal M.2 slot or not.  Here's my recommendations

If it DOES have a M.2 slot, here's the SSD I'd recommend.  One of the fastest on the market, and only a few dollars more compared to the bottom feeders.

If it does NOT have a M.2 slot, and you need to replace the magnetic drive, go with this SSD.

Thank you for the replies.  Yes, it has the appropriate slots.  I've already have opened the cover to add ram.  I go through something like this every five to eight years when I upgrade to a new computer.  I set it up how I want it, and then do not touch till it dies.

If you choose Samsung they have a great migration utility that makes copying over everything a breeze.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but there are two types of M.2 SSD drives.  SATA and NVMe.  Make sure you get the correct one.  NVMe uses PCIe lanes and is much faster than SATA, but if the laptop doesn't support NVMe, you'll be stuck with SATA.  In the end, they will both be faster than a HDD.

Then use whatever internet search engine your heart desires.

And ignore all the how-to videos on Goggle-owned YouTube.

I use Samsung SSD drives in all of my computers and have been very happy with their performance and ZERO problems.  I'm running an 860 EVO in my primary computer if you're looking for a certain model number to possibly get.

You want Win 10 in the SSD. You could clone the HDD to the SSD.  I did this when I first got my Samsung using their utility. It was faster than an HDD, but not by much. When I upgraded to Win 10, I formatted the SSD and did a fresh install of everything. Huge difference in speed.

You could maybe do a fresh install of Windows on the new SSD and leave the install on the HDD as is. You shouldn't have any issues with Windows activation.  If you have to warrant the laptop, you can pull the SSD and fix the boot order, if the manufacturer even cares about such things.
