So a buddy of mine was at a range doing some shooting a few weeks back.
Shooting both .223 Rem & .300 BO uppers on a single lower switching back & forth.

He somehow got a .300 BO round mixed in & extruded it halfway down the barrel of his .223 Aero upper.
At that point he didn't realize what happened. Bolt jammed up couldn't mortar it out.
He brought it to my place & I was able to get the bolt free & low & behold, a .300 BO casing was stuck in the bolt. Popped primer fell out too.

When the rifle jammed up, he said it made a "pop" & like cooked off the propellant with lots of smoke. I had read that same description in another thread here.
I didn't have a rod to try & pound it out so he took it to his LGS & had it removed.
We are all amazed that it didn't kaboom the rifle. The .300 was a subsonic round.
Smith said the barrel & bolt were fine.

He wants to have a jeweler mount it on a chain as a reminder, I told him it would be a better reminder as a butt plug.
Be careful out there.
Edit: Grammer

Yes, I was pretty shocked. When I got the bolt out, we measured the length to the tip & the back of the round. It was like 2.25".

Damn that’s pretty cool. I can’t believe the barrel/bolt is still in one piece.

You're absolutely right. He knows exactly how lucky he is. A super sonic round would have been a whole other story.
He is very safety oriented but let it lapse during this trip.

Barrel may be fine but the bolt and barrel extension lugs may not have much life left.

We know proof loads weaken bolt lugs.  Betcha that was a hell of a proof load he just fired.

As soon as I learned that .300BO chambered in a 5.56 chamber, I was cured of any desire to own one.

Everybody has to make their own rules and live with what they're comfortable with but that won't be an issue I ever concern myself with.

That right there is one reason I don't want anything to do with 300 BO and similar rounds that go into 5.56 mags and will fit the same chamber.

Nope, not blaming the companies, it would be on me.

I try to inspect each round before I load it into mags but I also know I get into a rhythm and go into auto load mode if not careful.

Also why I went with 9mm and .45 acp in pistols and never got into .40's, the split between 9mm and .40 isn't much.

Crazy!
Glad your buddy didn't get hurt.
It amazes me how much "bullet" is there compared to a regular .223 bullet.
Make a new wildcat round called the 223 javelin and start with your bullet!

I did not think an oversized bullet would extrude so perfectly uniformly like that, especially that long.

That’s crazy.

This.

I find it hard to believe everything stayed together for the bullet to do that. wow.

I have both & I'm lucky enough to have a range at my house.
I control the ammo that's out & neither is at the shooting bench at the same time ever.
I only allow one shooter at the line at a time too so I can watch. My son is also a great set of eyes as well as a few others.

Now ask yourself what would have happened if it had a steel penetrator in the bullet................

That's crazy.
I've been on the fence about wanting a 300 upper.
I'm not sure if this is a pro or a con.
It blew that bullet pretty far thru that barrel!

I'm glad the barrel didn't turn into shrapnel.

I have two almost identical P226's one in 9mm, the other in .40 when I take both of them to the range I'm feel like I'm tempting fate.

Even if I have rifles in both calibers at the range, I make sure I only have one on the line at any given time.  I also make sure that the ammo on the line matches the rifle. That's just common sense.

I'm guessing it ran out of steam just after it passed the gas port.

I would toss the bolt in the garbage just out of prudence.

Some tappy taps with a rod and a big hammer/mallet

If the barrel is threaded a bet a great way to get one out would be to use a grease gun and tap in on the muzzle threads.
