GameStop Corp. (GME) shares soared Wednesday in an apparent short squeeze, but one analyst who specializes in information on short selling doesn't think that's the case.

GameStop shares surged more than 60% Wednesday -- which would be its largest one-day percentage gain ever, according to Dow Jones data --more than a week after short interest on the videogame retailer's stock exceeded the number of shares outstanding. At last check, more than 125 million shares had traded hands in the day's session, compared with a 52-week daily average volume of 6.5 million shares.

While GameStop has 69.8 million shares outstanding, short interest on the stock rose to 71.2 million shares on Dec. 31 from a previous 68.1 million shares, according to FactSet data.

On Monday, GameStop shares finished up 10% (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/gamestops-stock-shoots-up-after-reaching-agreement-with-activist-investor-2021-01-11) after it reached an agreement with activist investor RC Ventures to add three of its members to the board, and advanced less than 0.1% on Tuesday. Also, on Monday, the company said holiday same-store sales rose 4.8% and that digital sales had jumped 309%.

While noting that shorts definitely were a part of the buying binge, Ihor Dusaniwsky -- the head of predictive analytics at financial technology and analytics firm S3 Partners, which specializes in analyzing data on short selling -- said he doesn't agree that GameStop's price surge was the result of a squeeze.

"GME's board shake-up and stronger holiday sales is causing a long-buying tsunami, which is the primary factor for the price move," Dusaniwsky said in emailed comments. "While I agree that we are seeing some shorts squeezed out of their positions due to massive mark-to-market losses today, this is much like the chicken-and-egg question -- did long buying lead to short covering\squeeze or short covering\squeeze lead to long buying?"

Dusaniwsky believes it's the former.

"We will not be seeing a massive drop in shares shorted over the next few days, more like a 10%-20% drop which would mean 7 to 14 million of shares covered, which is nowhere near the almost 70 million shares traded this morning," the analyst said. "Long buyers are the primary force driving GME's stock price up. "

GameStop shares have skyrocketed more than 500% in the past 12 months, compared with a 16% gain in the S&P 500 index and a 42% rise in the Nasdaq Composite Index .

I saw POWW on reddit this morning, thought it wouldn't move much so I didn't grab any.

Should have expected that.

If you look at Olin and Vista Outdoors, both are sitting at $28 right now. POWW might end up around the same if people are loading up on ammo stock.

Huge drop in volume today vs the rally.  I think it's a good company to hold, especially at sub $500M valuation... but I fear the temptation management will have to dilute the shares.  Lots of money on the table for them right now if they wanted to grab it.  Anyways, I bought some at 0.87 for overnight hold.  Just because I hate sleeping i guess.

Good idea to take to AH pricing with a grain of salt. It rarely has any impact on the following day's open. Seriously.

This is the front page from MVIS's most recent AH's action, taken straight off the NASDAQ. See all the single digits? People buying ONE share, or two or three? It's meant to walk the price up or down, and means very little. Stupid game played by day traders who think they're "moving" the tape. It's actually called "painting the tape".

The exception is when AH is accompanied by huge volume. Today's volume so far is 420K. Peanuts.

I'm currently down $1400 on ZOM but I'm not worried. The feeding frenzy will start up again soon. Plus we can be pretty sure it will happen before the end of March. The stock is on peoples radar and they know when market launch is scheduled. FOMO will bring them back.

TANH is seeing some chatter on Reddit.

EV/Clean energy company, and Biden has an announcement about clean energy plans coming up.

They haven't seen any major spikes, and were at $4 before a big offering in November.

Not sure but they have an offering of 47 cents a share plus  option to buy more at 71 cents after nine months.... I'm a rookie and went against my better judgment but I pulled the trigger.

Don't want to directly link since the policy isn't well known to me (hence doing it against my better judgment)  but search draganfly dealmaker if curious

Bngo is a swing trade for me. I was in and out taking profits on the way up and bought back in when it dipped into the 4’s  if you’re looking for a quick 50%  today you might not get it but it will run up a bit. ETFs and institutional investors have been cashing out of their competitor. Speculation is they plan on scooping up some BNGO. Many of them are attending the symposium going on this week. I’ll probably sell half if it gets between 8-10 this week and hold the other half long. EYE’s is more of a gamble and looks like it could run a little today. As always do you own DD and buy on the morning dip if you decide to get it.

@apexcrusade

How much would you expect GME to drop within the next week or do you believe it can level off and keep any gains it made this week?

Do you think it would be a good idea to get into GME at it's current prices or do you think the potential for a large dip requiring a long recovery is too high.

It's just a difficult question to answer as there are multiple dynamics at play.  My strategy is to hold a core position for the long term - I have some  at 5.98, 8.45, low teens, so setting on a nice gain now..  Bankruptcy risk has been neutralized for now, we have new players getting into GME who appear to want to make it a successful company, (Cohen from Chewy) possibly via a merger or buy out, etc.  So you have that.  Also I think the short on this is something like 140% of total shares!   I have been watching carefully for the mother of all short squeezes to come.  If/When that happens I would be inclined to take some profits,.  Therefore under that scenario you could get in at current prices and make out.

I've noticed the action pre market and almost was going to make a quick trade.  Seems the range is about $32 - $37, so in big at 32 and out at 37.

So, I will hold the core position I have and maybe trade around that and take advantage of the volatility.  To answer your question I have no idea on short term price action  - it appears as if it might have found a new trading range meaning maybe support now at a higher price,  until something happens, news, etc, but would not be uncomfortable picking up more in the low 30's right now   If price goes down for a while, I am ok with it since I see long term value.  If price spikes I might sell those for a quick gain and keep the core position.    I guess my thesis from the start was to wait and wait for the short squeeze and then get out, things have change though to slighly modify that.  I will take profits but probably keep a position for the long term.

Right now it's trying to breach it's 52 wk high.

They have a conference today (I think today), might be a longer term hold as they have a few products in the works for this year, a multi strain covid vaccine being one of them.

I might drop my PTE today for not much profit, I thought it would move more after their conference on Monday but it hasn't done much.
