I've been reading the book Play It Loud by Brad Tolinski and Alan Di Perna on the history of the electric guitar. It's a great, and uniquely American, story. Would highly recommend.
It makes you want to look at all the guitars being discussed, but is very lacking in photos. So show me pics of your coolest or most interesting vintage guitars. |

I came back to the thread expecting to admire old Fenders, Gretschs, Rickenbackers and Gibsons. Normally you can count on Arfcom to have nice toys.
|
|
Not necessarily interesting, but here is my oldest guitar, built in the late 70s, possibly very early 80s.

We have a musicians and music forum but yeah.... Arfcom has some amazing guitars and players.

Not an electric but here's my '65 Gibson J50. Passed down through the fam from Grandparent to Father to me. This and a vintage Browning are about all I'll ever inherit from my salt of the earth family of farmers.

Think everyone spent their money elsewhere. My most vintage guitar is a 96 Squier.
Have my dads Hummingbird but it’s not all old. I’ve got Japanese made Ibanez 7 and 8 strings, a weirdo bolt on PRS, and a Japanese Jackson. Got a thing for Japanese guitars apparently. No photos available but I have '56 and '63 Strats, a '63 Jaguar, a '56 TV Junior and a '57 Junior.
For amps I have a '57 Tweed Champ, a '62 Brown Deluxe, a '63 Bassman and a '57 Ampeg Dolphin 2. |

Bought a custom color blue 1963 Fender Jaguar in 1975 for little money, it became a treasured possession. Got hard up for money around 1999, sold it on the internet to a surf guitar collector for a very nice profit, so I was happy. Shipped it out to the buyer pronto. (Hawaii} He paid the expensive shipping.
He took it to a vintage guitar shop, where they took it apart for cleaning and found writing under the pick guard indicating it had been refinished in Tucson in 1974. There was also blue overspray on the wiring. I truly thought it was original. The guy was pissed and thought I had tried to cheat him, and I understood that. I refunded his money, but I hated the thought of being deemed dishonest. Live and learn. Looked like this. Attached File |

My oldest amp is a 50's Gibson. My oldest guitars are early '90s guitars, but I have a Callaham Strat from when he was still building Strats and Teles. Best guitar I own and sounds as good as any vintage Strat.

The original strings are in an envelope with it: https://i.imgur.com/iYCI1dT.jpg View Quote As far as I know, my dad's not the biggest Chet Atkins fan, that was one of those deals where one of his friends wanted to learn guitar back in the day, and never stuck with it, and it spent probably 40 years sitting under his bed. And it's not my Gretsch, I just had temporary ownership while I was trying to sell it for him. It never sold so I gave it back to him. I won't lie, ole Chet designed a hell of a guitar, but the Gretsch sound ain't my thing. Dad's always been a Fender guy, and he got a Black Falcon or Penguin, whatever the black Gretsch is. And then he got this one, but he went back to his Fenders. A couple weeks ago I had to rewire his Tele for him, and I played it to make sure everything was good, and they really need to slant the pickup the other way on those things. Sounded great for rhythm stuff, but the first lead I tried to play I felt like I got stabbed in the ear with an ice pick. I'm not going to lie, I'm a Gibson guy, if it would have been a Gibson instead of a Gretsch, he would have gotten a phone call about how somebody broke in and stole it. |

I’m considering buying a 60s Les Paul Jr in a year but I can’t decide if it’s actually worth it.

Quoted: How much are those strats going for these days? Back in the 90's that would have been over 15k a piece. View Quote I have no idea what they're worth today. I paid $5k for the '56 (and most of that was trading in other guitars) and somewhere around $3.5k for the '63. Yeah, I've had them a while. If I ever got rid of my guitars (which I have no plans to) the '63 would probably be the last to go. It has the most wonderful neck of any I've played. When I stopped playing I held on to them in case my sons wanted them. So, naturally, they became drummers. |

Quoted: I'm in no way a snob about trying to apply any sort of definition to "vintage." View Quote It's all relative of course. But for many years (not any more), Ebay had the musical instrument/guitar category of "Vintage (pre-1980)." I still see it that as a good cutoff point. Most post-1980 guitar gear is a bunch of cheesy plastic crap, solid state amps, PCB tube amps, and shitty plywood guitars from the far east. Anything new that's made like pre-80s gear is called "boutique" these days. |

Vintage guitars for the most part are like any other vintage thing. The desirability doesnt really means there’s anything actually better about them. People just like to have things that other people don’t.
For some, obviously the history and sentimental value about them can be appealing. The story of who played the guitar is the most obvious one. Sometimes it’s cool just to pick up a guitar that’s been to hell and back and still sounds good. Definitely particularly for acoustics there is something about old broken in wood that in some cases does sound better. But if you know anything about guitars that could ask because they just randomly had found the perfect piece of wood. In my opinion though a lot of the stuff is total garbage. Most vintage guitars are not better instruments. The plastics and the capacitors, the internals, the hardware, is all in general subpar material as compared to today. Vintage guitars for the most part are available because people want them and they are a limited commodity — more power to them. . |
