By all accounts the Ukraine invasion or at least the current resuts of same, is not very popular IN Russia.  Directly attacking the populace at THIS point might galvanize support for the war rather than allow its unpopularity to perhaps hasten a withdrawl.

You do not need a war to ruin the lives of many people who do not support a government.  Just look at the US itself and countries that adopted the socialist regime that the same gang "supporting Ukraine" is trying to impose here.

IMO the way the 1st Gulf war went should have been an inkling.

Yes, it was arabs using monkey model Warsaw pact equipment. True.

But, iraq was an experienced army. They were large. But, it just shows how much Soviet doctrine sucks. No one can seriously make the argument the Russians are using monkey model equipment against Ukraine. And Ukraine, with the help of western equipment and training is more than holding their own.

Ukraine is largely capable of holding its own with Soviet equipment, aside from not having nearly enough of it. So with the exception of some critical gaps like good guided missiles, a suitable amount of Soviet gear would have also done the job.

The 1980's Soviet psyops movie, "War Games" missed the point.  The game, Global Thermonuclear War has rules.  Cold War II has rules also.

The Soviets understand one thing and one thing only, We will bury you.  That's the first rule.

The second rule is, No matter how deep a hole you hide in, we will bury you.

To prove that we are committed to Rules 1 and especially Rule 2, we must keep ready multiple ways of attacking ready to go to fullfill the requirements of both Rule 1 and especially Rule 2.

After all the ICBM's are spent, we will send bombers over your smoking hole and bomb the holes you are hiding in.  Or after all the ICBM's are spent, we will hit you with nukes launched from Subs.  Or we will hit you with nukes delivered by fighters.

The moment Putin threatened to use nukes, there was no choice but to kill his invaders a few miles from their border.

This is necessary to prove that even with an Alzhimer's patient installed as president, we will ignore the threat of nuclear war.  We are under that threat at all times.  Being threatened with nuclear war doesn't matter.  Proving you will nuke them back is what matters.  Failing to do so, invites nuclear war.  That's the rules.  Same as always.

I'm not sure I understand this concept of "fair game" considering that Russia already pounded Ukraine's capital city including civilian targets early on in the war.

It would seem at this point that Ukraine can strike anything they want anywhere in Russia and not have overstepped the norms of the conflict that Russia established in the first place.

The moment Russia invaded Ukraine's soil it gave that country the right to retaliate in kind.

The problem poses a few questions such as:
Can it?
Would it?

That "war" timing and how it has been acted looks weird, mostly if we look at the traditional way Russia does its "war thing".

Of course, we do not know for sure what's happening there since all information getting here is censored and/or redacted and fabricated.   So, anything could be happening there.

Would it be justified? Sure.

Would it be wise? (at this point) I'm not so sure.

Would it be wise for us to provide Ukraine with the long range capability to strike 'deep' inside rooshia AND encourage them to do it?  No, I don't think it is. (At this point)

With logistical help, Ukraine APPEARS to be 'holding their own' in a war that APPEARS to be very UNpopular IN rooshia.

Bottom is that current public sentiment is currently in Ukraines favor which could lead to rooshia withdrawing  earlier then they would be if Ukraine is forced to eject them (if possible).  So DON'T do something that would galvanize rooshian popular support for the war and thus put a favorable outcome for Ukraine at risk.

I think at best Ukraine could benefit from targeting operational level targets nearer the border with low potential for collateral damage. That said, it’s unclear to me if Russia would admit it though or blame a smoking accident.

Two right off of the top of my head include, first, the Sino-Soviet border war in 1969; hard to say what real casualties were given that both countries were communist.  Second is the Kargil War between India and Pakistan.  It took place along their borders in 1999 and resulted in thousands of casualties.  It occurred along the disputed border in Kashmir and began when the Pakistanis crossed over into Indian territory.  There have since been smaller combat actions between the two countries.
