Need 2 x 5/16" by 2" long SS bolts, and lock washers to go with them.
I went to the local hardware store and they are closed permanently. Damn you CHINA! So I go to Lowe's, just a couple of loose 5/16" SS bolts in 2" and no nuts at all. So I starting digging and looking in the bins, nothing, ask someone, nothing in stock. I go to the specialty screw drawers and I was able to score the last 2, 5/16-24" x 2" and two lock nuts. $7.66.... The bolts are Taiwanese and the nuts are China crap. I am going to lube these thing the heck up can't take the change for them to gall up. TL;DR, damn you CHina |

I needed a new "clip" for the end of my winch rope on the CanAm the other day. Tractor supply had nada in ANY size.

Do you have a NAPA parts store or something similar around?
Might be worth a peek there. |

I think it was oxtool that did a youtube vid on bolts.
Chinese bolts were actually stronger than US made ones of same spec. |

Ace Hardware is my first stop when I need just a couple bolts/washers, etc.

GD: Bitches about Chinese stuff in all our stores.
Also GD: Why in the fuck is a bolt and nut $4 each?? Yes, I know this example was Chinesium, but everybody buying the cheapest shit possible is what pushed companies to buy/sell more cheap shit in the first place. |

Sounds like my experience at Lowe's the other day. I was in need of a replacement hammer handle, the local mom & pop hardware store closed at noon (Sat) so I swung by Lowe's. I'm looking and looking, everywhere, for a replacement handle but not finding one. Finally break down and ask the "expert" working the tool section where the replacement handles were located. Her reply, "I don't think they make those, I've never seen one". I assured her this was a real thing and left.
I picked up a handle this morning at mom & pop's and have a functional hammer again. |

This is such a weird ass town.
No one does any of their own work, no one cuts their own grass, or washes their own car. Plenty chain restaurants few mom and pop places, |

When I ran a shop many years ago, we did batch testing on certain fasteners to ensure they met the spec for class/grade. Not all US fasteners met the spec they were advertised at, and no Chinese ones we tested did (maybe some do, but not the ones we tested). Granted, that was a long time ago, but it was sort of frightening knowing how inconsistent some batches we tested were.

This past year they had to halt and take out an additional loan because lumber costs skyrocketed and ate their entire budget. |

Glad I'm not building a whole house right now I knew they were high, but that is insane. Glad we built a couple years ago Yeah... ALL building materials are up in general. 19/32 OSB is $30+ per sheet Everything is up 15, 20, 30%+ Of course, it’s all blamed on COVID. To be fair, some of it is - between plants shutting down due to exposure, the whole ridiculous occupancy bullshit impacting manufacturing facilities, and the fact that covid related UEI payouts provided significant raises and incentive to stay home to factory workers, all while the housing industry continued to boom, severely offset supply & demand. Add in fear mongering and panic, and well - there you have it. Thankfully, at least pressure treated lumber is finally (mostly) available again, albeit at retarded prices. It sucked carrying framing packages at 25% markup, having TJI’s sit in the mud, pushing out truss drops, rescheduling crews and shit daily all while waiting for the fucking sill plates to arrive. Fun stuff. What’s gonna be interesting, is, given the huge hit to overall margins (can’t claw back existing contracts), what’s gonna happen to the industry once the Dems tax everything they can find to fucking death, all the commodity prices explode further, the bond market takes a shit and rates soar. Don’t get me started on the Commercial space. |

Other than that, mcmaster is the place to go when time and availability are more important than money. Even then, their hardware is reasonable for the most part. |

I have to go buy 2 PT 2x10s, one 20' and one 10' (rebuilding my deck).
Dreading both trying to find them and how much they will cost.. It isn't just real wood. Got a quote to replace my PVC deck boards with Trex. $5k for 20, 20' 2x6s (that is just for the boards). Nope, the old boards weren't so bad after all, cleaning them up and reusing them. |

Tractor Supply sells bolts and nuts by the pound and I've been stocking up on different sizes, just fill a bag with 3/8 bolts of different lengths, fill another bag with 7/16 bolts of different lengths, fill a bag with 3/8 washers and nuts, etc. The problem is their restock sucks. They'll be out of 1/4-20 nuts for months, and this was pre-covid.
But anyway, I drop these bags into some enclosed parts bins and I have at least some of the common hardware ready to roll without having to make a run to the store. Yeah, it's kind of like your grandpa saving mason jars full of screws, but this is new stuff organized by size. |

Quoted: Local owned hardware stores are just flat out closed? View Quote @Aimless Yep, we only had two hardware stores in the whole town of 18,000 people. That in an of itself is odd I know. But we had an ACE on my side of town and a True Value on the other side...Both are permanantly shut down. Only hard ware in town is Lowes and NAPA has some oddball stuff too. |
