It's true.
Arguments to the otherwise are entertained. Poll coming. |

Mhmm it's good but whats the parameters? Can a 3 minute scene compete with it?
|
|
Fuck no. The first part of the movie showing the broke down pig farmer was so much better. That's the whole point of the movie.
|
|
I've always thought it was up there but as far as finales go I can't put anything definitely above The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
|
|
+1. Although trying to replicate Munny's epic threat during a spousal support mediation can work against you. Fair warning.

never understood why so many people like Tombstone so much more.
this is one of my top 5 films.. definitely a great ending. Children of Men may give it a run for its money as far as endings go, imho. |

Great movie that gets better with each viewing. It actually becomes deeper the more I watch it.

That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.
|
|
Will was only there to avenge his partner's horrible death.
He did that. It's just a perfect ending to a sad story. |
|
I always liked "I don't deserve to die, I was building a house!" "'Deserves' got nothing to do with it."

Will and the Kid are talking about killing. It's no good. Take another drink, Kid.
Then the whore ride up with their gold and the news of Ned being beaten to death. Will takes a pull from the bottle and it's all over but the killing. Such perfect writing, such beautiful writing. |

The end of Unforgiven is excellent.
I also enjoyed the last 20 minutes or so of Zero Dark Thirty |

When you kill a man you take away all he is, all he has, and everything he ever hopes to have!
Best I can do from memory. Loved the show! |

It’s a great ending and a great movie
But Clint makes a lot of good endings I know op is strictly ending but these scenes compete for great moments Ahem For a Few Dollars More - Final Duel (1965 HD) Low Down Yankee Lier Once upon a time in the West (1968) - Final duel (HD) Dirty Harry - Climax Chase (Part One) (4K) |

Never did understand the point of making William Munny a hero.
|
|
“Pale Rider” has a great end too.
But “Fistfull of Dollars” is hard to beat. “You said when a man with a 45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with the 45 is a deadman. I’d like to prove that.” |

Man I love me some unforgiven but I gotta go with The G B U Mexican standoff as the best scene in western..

I never saw him as a hero. He was an assassin. A hired gunman. A killer for money. He took the job for altruistic reasons, but he wasn't a hero. He came to kill the man that cut up the girl and get his money. Had the sheriff not killed Ned, he wouldn't have lifted a finger to deal with the rest of the riffraff. He wasn't a good man. He even said as much through the movie. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I personally think the opening shot of the final gun battle in Open Range is one of the best scenes ever. Charley: "You the one killed our friend?" Butler: "That's right. I shot the boy, too. Unforgiven, Unforgiven... nope, that's not ringing a bell.
Wait, is that the one where Kirk Cameron fights the Antichrist? Yeah, I have that on VHS. Bitchin' movie, man! |

Odd man out here, loved movie but.........
The closing shot of the old homestead with words across the screen and haunting guitar riff: And she could never figure out why her daughter would marry somebody below her, wtte. I can always find viloince in a movie, but something that poignant? First time in 50 years to use that word. I done caught the gay. Edit beat by less than a minute on the music. |

It's among the best for sure. Just recorded it last night from Direct TV to watch again.

Great Movie!
How I see it, it's the story of a man that has only really ever been good at one thing and that one thing he does no one has ever been able to best him at. When he commits to his profession he commits 100% without fear or hesitancy. He is a master chess player in the world of gun fighting. This movie is a much darker version of Shane, Like Shane Will will always be a gunfighter no matter how hard he tries to suppress it - Little Bill was convinced by building a home violent death was no longer a threat in his life and became relaxed, for Will his own home was full of death. I would have preferred the ending if he would have taken the scarred prostitute with him to try and start over. |

OP's not wrong.....Come to that a lot of Eastwood's later movies have great endings.

He wasn't really a hero in the movie. First he was just after the money then he was all about revenge for his friend and partner. View Quote It's a character trope that became popular in the gangster films of the 30s and 40s and really was perfected in film noir movies. Westerns are just an offshoot of the gangster and noir films. He is not 100% bad. He has redeemimg qualities. He knows the difference between good and bad. He is honorable and loyal. Even though he says he is bad, he does have good within him...and it is in his core. The above poster is right when he mentions Shane. Shane is very similar. He can't settle down because in his core he is a gunfighter. However, he has a set of core values that are admirable. We know this because he fights for the Starrett family and against the Riker gang. He even goes through his values when he tells Joey how to grow up and be a man. This character trope was made popular because men were coming home from war thinking that they were ruined by death and killing...but deep down they have good in their heart--they are redeemable and honorable. Unforgiven is a throwback to that character type. |

The scene where him and the kid are under the tree and the girl is slowly riding to them with the gold is one of my favorite scenes ever.
The conversation between will and the kid is great. |
