Today the Swedish defense materiel agency signed a contract with SAKO of Finland for new carbines and sniper rifle.

Still using a bolt gun? I can see an advantage of no brass being ejected.

Bullshit.
Same family of weapons for Finland. 5.56 from Sako for infantry. 7.62 for DMR/Sniper rifle TRG10 for long range precision work for snipers in 338. Think about it: SAKO barrel quality, piston-driven... Should give HK some competition as SAKO traditionally does not screw civilian market. HK? "Civilian versions". |

The infantry move is consistent with the logic of the US army's desire to move beyond 5.56. However, they're sticking to a NATO standard caliber, which is important considering the relatively small role they play in the larger context of NATO.
I think what's more interesting is that they're still keeping 556 in the picture and having a split of rifles according to infantry vs support rifles. I'm sure weight and bulk are the reasons, but interesting still. |

My idea:
An AR type sniper rifle chambered in a new .284 Winchester based cartridge with the length to shoulder increased to 2.2" similar to 6.5 Weatherby RPM but even longer and using the heaviest .284 bullets with a 15 round magazine and a heavy barrel taper instead of a .338 Lapua bolt action. |

Sako AR-type rifle, I want one, I want one now!
I want that bolt gun too, but I'm not shelling out $11k for one. With the price of 308/762 and the inability to find reasonable cost FN FAL mags (that work), DS Arms really should have been/be looking into making FN FNC and AK5 rifles. Not THAT hard to make, shit the Pakistani's make all sorts of knock offs with 1/10th of the infrastructure. |

An 11.5 inch 5.56 and a 16 inch 7.62x51? Are suppressors standard issue?
