Anyone familiar with the cost of painting.  Shop just said $8500 for a recent one they did.  Body is good.  Been awhile since I have shopped paint jobs.

That seems like a lot

I once painted a Suzuki Samurai black for like $30.
Took like 6 cans at $5 each.
May not have been real high quality job though.

Seems high, unless you're doing a color change or have lots of dings and/or major scratches that need to be addressed first.

I would be expecting somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of that price.

It all depends on how good of a job they're going to do.  If you want the paint job to be 100% like factory (meaning they take all trim off, take the panels off, do ALL the surfaces, etc., then it might cost that much.

You can always sand it down yourself, then have someone paint it...

Doesn’t look like it needs a paint job to me. Rock it as it is.

I priced out my Jeep CJ5 recently.  Paint job quotes started at $4500.

What was the range?  It’s a small car.  Might be interested at $4000.  This same shop quoted me $1000 on a rear bumper as part of a repair on my 09 GMC 2500HD long bed.  I see them for anywhere from $300-$600 and up.  Think I’ll get another quote.

Just rattle can it. 8500 paint for a 100 truck is a bad idea. Or just remove the crap from the sides.

Do you have the skills to prep it?  Maaco will spray anything on the cheap.  Probably under a grand.

Just talking to a coworker yesterday about missing my old Samurai.  Mine was a tin top.

That was a "we don't want to fuck with it" price.

I've painted a ton of rigs similar to that with industrial/tractor paint for a couple hundred dollars.

You can do it outside too.

I had a shop here fix a ton of rust damage and rhino line the exterior and interior of mine for $3500. Fuck all that.

Your are going to find a lot of paint/body shops will only do jobs with a certain base price.

Around here the minimum verbal is $5k.

Keep asking until you find someone who wants the work.

Hell, around here 95% of the shops won't touch an all over paint job.  It's all about the quick in and out insurance jobs.  Big chains have bought out so many of the bodyshops that a small guy cannot survive these days.
FWIW, quality paint is not cheap.  When I did my '66 Mustang I dropped about $3500 on quality materials. And that was almost 10 years ago.

I plan on getting some more quotes.  First open day is Mar. 29 for this shop so they’re booked over 30 days.  Truck functionality is fine so no rush.

Did you just call your Suzuki Samurai a truck?

Full frame, two axles, 4wd.  Sounds like a truck to me. Although a very small truck.    Remove the back seat and you have a 4' bed.

$8,500 seems high but it all depends on what you asked for and the shops work.

Scuff and shoot with mid grade paint,  it's more than a few thousand too high.

If you said  "I want everything on the body repaired or replaced with a quality complete repaint with factory decals reapplied."
Its could be the norm for your area.

You can get it done cheaper for sure.

I wouldn't spend more then a Macco +1 option (Where they actually sand and tape it up)  Maybe $1000-1500.

I would peel the stickers off of it, wash it real good, and then take a buffer to it to see what you are working with.  It’s a project, you could try your hand at painting it yourself if you have time.  Worst case, you screw up and sand it off.

Used a Flex polisher and some Meguiars light compound.  A lot better.

Ordered some parts to install new soft top (came with car).

Looks good.  I would throw some paint on that spot on the drivers side and buff it some more, then spray some clear coat on it.  You would have a decent 20 footer.
