Quoted: Really? I can walk into a number of grocery stores and pick up some root right now. But Washington has always had a pretty high Japanese population and is a big tourist destination for them. Which works out great for enjoying some decent sushi. View Quote Well I know the green stuff they sell at sushi restaurants is not real wasabi and I'll admit I've never looked in a grocery store to see if there was any real wasabi. If all I need to do is look in the right spot then will try some next time I go to the grocery store. |

They come from the same plant family but horseradish is a root while wasabi comes from the stem of it's plant. Wasabi definitely has a sweetness and more floral flavor to it you don't find in horseradish. Wasabi will also cost you. I think the last time I bought some it was about $15-20 an ounce. |

Rhizomes are underground STEMS which roots come off of. Same with Ginger and Turmeric. They are both plants, that have roots, but the Ginger and Turmeric we consume, comes from the RHIZOMES of the plant. 100% the same as Wasabi. View Quote Sushi was invented as a way to package preserved rice and fish in to-go meals. It was the Japanese equivalent to gas station hot dogs. It has since been fetishized. It was just a way of preserving seafood before modern refrigeration. And like most ancient food preservation things, they were done out of necessity and not flavor. If you want to talk about Japanese gas station hot dogs, that is onigiri. Which are also fantastic. The Japanese 7 Elevens are fucking a million times better than here in the US. I could eat onigiri from one for lunch every day and it would never grow old. But I would have to throw in a katsu and eggsalad sando every once in a while. Quoted: Sauce does not belong on sushi. My personal preference tends to agree with you with a couple exceptions, but I don't blame anyone for eating what they like. As for my exceptions... Soy is a sauce. Ponzu is a sauce. Unagi NEEDS to have that eel sauce. Edit: For Unagi, the vast majority of it is from China or other parts of South East Asian (primarily Korea). I would be willing to bet that 95% percent of the people in here who have had Unagi have never actually had JAPANESE eel. It is just too cost prohibitive. But that is also a reason why that sauce is so important, because Chinese/Korean eel is trash (comparatively speaking, I still eat a ton of it) and needs sauce. |
