So supposedly the new stimulus includes a minimum wage hike which got me thinking....
I don't think I would still tip if they no longer rely on tips. |
Will it apply min wage to service workers.
You better believe they will continue to tell you they need tips. |
Nope, that goes out the window with $15/hr. I may consider tipping for a delivery type service though.
Poll assumes I tip to begin with. Tink those that get most of their wages from tips are exempt from minimum wage to begin with.

Nope your making a “living wage” now. Enjoy your new $15 with no tip. I’ll enjoy my $15 hamburger since the business can barley survive without passing on the raise to the customers.

This is kind of funny. I worked as a chef on a mid tier restaurant and the wait staff did very well because the regular tables ran like $50 a person and we did banquet rooms of up to 100 people. They made money because of volume not time. Even at Applebee's you do 5 tables in an hour your making $50 bucks easy. That is a lot but even 2 tables you're making $20 an hour.
Sit down service workers are going to get fucked |

In Louisiana minimum wage for a server is $2.19/hr because they make it up in tips. In the early 90s I worked at a restaurant and the captains made about $200.00 a night, front waiters about $135 night, and back waiters about $125.00 a night. Each team had 6 tables that turned over 3 to 4 times night, more if the team was on the game and got them out quickly.
Is this $15.00/hr minimum wage for servers also? |
It really depends on the price of the meal and the delta from where it used to be.
No tips.
I also expect zero mistakes in my fast food orders from now on. |
I totally believe in tipping to the service level as locally most waitstaff make $2.xx/hour.
If they start making $15/hour, the food prices will go up without a doubt. And they will be getting paid to do their job instead of earn their pay. I will most likely not be tipping anybody making $15/hour. |

I may be wrong but minimum wage laws don't apply when the employee receives tips. Tips are suppose to be claimed daily and taxed as part of their income.
Regardless I will tip. Increasing minimum wage won't help anyone. It just means that everything we purchase will cost more since employers have a larger overhead. Groceries, gas, fast food, etc. It won't help minimum wage earners so much as hurt the middle class directly above them. If minimum wage is increased do you think everyone is going to get a coinciding pay bump. Nope... those making $18 currently will still make the same but there money won't go as far. |
Won't be dining out as often, as a $15 per hour minimum wage will force half of the restaurants to close.
I wish we would go the European route and just stop fucking tipping

So a 40$ meal is now going to be 60-80$. I don’t think this will work out the way Xiden thinks it will.
If servers are making $15/hr, I'm not tipping unless they go FAR above and beyond.

Kiosks and food machines will take over with fast food. Human staffing will be bare minimum.
Obviously yes!
If you could make the same amount of money or more doing literally anything else why would anyone be a server? I like good service so I’m happy to pay 20-40% more for it. |

Servers will be exempt from the minimum wage like they are now. Still, this might kill the restaurant industry in some places. San Francisco can afford to pay Dairy Queen workers $15/hour. Richland, Mississippi can't.
Nope. Servers make full state minimum wage in WA & OR, which is over $13/hr. Since I learned that years ago, I’ve stopped tipping, unless it is one of my regular 3 restaurants.

If minimum wage doubles, businesses will simply half their staff.
I see no reason for tips if wait staff pay goes up to $15 an hour. Their tip will be included in their new wages. |

Either way it is an attack on small businesses under the guise of benefitting the impoverished. Small businesses struggling currently won't be able to survive or will have to lay people off in order to stay in the green. Restaurants for most are a luxury and if there is a corresponding hike in menu prices it just won't be an option for most people. Without customers restaurants they will go under. The economy suffers in general (specifically small business). Of course it'll be blamed on other factors (coronavirus and unrest). Impoverish us into submission if they can't shame us into it.

View Quote See, I understand that and it sucks. But the theory is that everyone will be making a living wage so why should I tip a waiter and not a cashier that has to scan and bag all my groceries? I would think that waiters maybe have to be paid even more to get people to still do the job when they can make the same $15 at an easier job. |

No.
Food prices will rise as a result. Many restaurants operate on less than a 5% margin...therefore the only way to make that up is to have a fairly dramatic increase in wages. Servers in the lower to middle tier sit-down restaurants will have pretty significant cut in tips I would imagine. I'm sure fine dining will not see much of a change, and poor fast food franchisees. Servers make good money for select hours. Owners follow those same peak times. I'd assume they will react by understaffing or closing during non-peak hours. They will have to cut workers below full-time status...we're talking about 25k+ a year for EACH employee. Fill-in staff, seasonal workers, and auxiliary staff that share tips will also begin to be too expensive to keep, so I'd assume servers will then begin to share their duties. I guess with the pay increase, they would be expected to do more work anyway. |
I won't be tipping because I won't be able to afford what they are serving.

I’ll quit eating out and cooking more. Shit is too expensive as it is for most casual dining/ fast food.
"Tips" will automatically be added to the bill.
I will bet $100 that will be the case after a few months after implementation. |
Tipped workers make full min wage on the west coast ($13.50 in WA). I tip 10% max.
