So, I have a grand to drop, and per my last  info thread here, I think the 7200 is the best feature set in my price range, and will be a good camera I could own for a long time.

I have in essence kit lenses, and a tamron 200-500. I do a lot of land scape stuff, so a Tokina 12-16 would be on my radar as well. Otherwise I stick to mostly wildlife, and am eager to have the ability to crop and zoom in on photos that my tamron can't quite get to.

So my question is- eBay has some 7200's with the Nikon 18-140 for 850. That would seem to be a good do it all carry around hiking lense, and would leave some budget for picking up a tokina around Black Friday. If that eBay option is a good deal, I'm sure they will do one of those sitewide 20% off coupons or whatever pretty soon.

Nikon does their refurb sale pretty frequently, which is 700 for a 7200, but I figure that 18-140 for 150 bucks is a pretty good deal?

Thanks gents, just looking to get the best bang for my buck.

IMHO, an 18 to 140 does neither wide really well, or zoom really well
but for a walk around to take holiday snaps it should be fine

Here is my buddy Norbert, out shooting wildlife, but his set up is for book and magazine image capture

The Tokina 11-20 (or 11-16) is a fantastic lens, IMO.  One of my favorites.

For a mid-range, I'm sold on the Nikon 24-120, but it's pretty pricey.  The one I replaced with the 24-120, the 18-105, served me well for years.  It's a kit lens, but it's a pretty good kit lens.

My big 3 are the Tokina, the Nikon 24-120, and the Tamron 150-600.

I've filled in with a 35 prime (everyone should have either the 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 prime) and picked up a rarely used 105 macro.  Need to use that 105 more; it's super sharp and is capable of much more than macro.

So consensus would be that the 18-140 would not be a great option? Reading around on line seems to say it is far from the worst for a do it all hiking lens

If you are willing to get a refurb D7200 and snag the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 from B&H that’ll be just about (maybe a touch over) $1000.

Why does there seem to be no love for the D7500?

I'm thinking that 16-80 is going to bridge the gap best between my soon to be new Tokina 11-16 and my 2-500. Shame about that price however.

The D7500 has the D500 sensor (good) with the D7200 AF (mostly OK) and a shiny new metering system. In trade for this, they took away a card slot, and made it so that you're unable to use a battery grip (useful to add weight/balance but also makes camera more comfortable)

In other words, it specs out nicely between the 7200 and 500 but is actually worse than either because of the limitations placed on it.

I don't know how Nikon manages to sell any at all.

Probably because most are sold as kits at big box stores like Costco and Sams. Both of those always have a big pile of the 7500's with a couple kit lenses for a good price so I'm sure a lot are bought as entry level cameras.

The D7500 is a great camera.  You can get into one cheap if you watch for a sale or ebay 15% coupon.

I do miss the extra card slot, tho.   The battery grip don't care.  The low light ISO noise is much less than my old camera.   But it is sooooo much more advanced and better than my old D7000 I'm willing to live with it.

If u can live with what they took away from it, it is a superb performer.

Used today's 15% off on eBay and got a 7200 for 488 shipped! Pretty excited, we shall see if any good Black Friday deals pop up for a Tokina 11-16, or that Nikon 16-80 looks like a serious performer.

Thanks again gents!

So, I am now the happy owner of a 7200.

My top end is pretty happily filled by a tamron 200-500. She's old, but my favorite pictures have been taken with it and I dig it.

So my next step is a tokina 11-16. With that out of the way, can we discuss the merits of the Nikon 16-80, VS. th nikon 24-120? With the crop sensor I feel like the 16-80 would offer a better quality, albeit missing the range. For general landscape, my favorite shooting style, I think the smaller lense offers a bit more, as opposed to a more so do it all in the 24-120?

I still have my 55-200 kit lense, should I want to mess around with an intermediate lens

I have the 24-120. I'd also like to have the 16-80.

I have a 18-70 that @fish223 hooked me up with.

The 16-80 would be a touch wider rand I could see the use, plus the faster aperture.

Eventually I plan to get the 11-20 from tokina that'll cover that gap.

The 11-20 and a 24-120 would be a hell of a pair.

So beyond glad I opted for the 24-120. This thing is insane.

Anyone have a lead on a 7200 charger?

MH-25A.  All the usual suspects have them depending on if you want new or used.  I can’t recommend an aftermarket charger for the EN-EL15 (I haven’t tried one).

My 24-120 was my most used lens until I got the 18-70 from fish223. It's a kit lens from a decade ago, but it's seriously good enough to be competitive.

I use it as much or more than the 24-120, if I don't want the length of the bigger lens. It's a lot lighter.

The 24-120 is kind of a pig. But I'm taking it out on Thursday with the new body to see what I can see. It's amazing what a solid set up can do for your confidence as a photographer.

Thank you again, gentleman. For all of your help In this endeavor.
