Let's say you have most stuff, but are short here and there.

You have extra large pistol primers, but are out of 45 Colt bullets.

You have extra small pistol primers, but are short on 300 BO brass.

You have a ton of Bullseye, but are short Accurate #7.

I'm just making stuff up.

But I would guess brass is not the issue.

Is 100 primers worth a pound of power?

Are 100 5.56 bullets worth a set of 44 Magnum dies?

Does one bullet equal a primer?

What if you have ALL the needed components, but, lack the equipment?

Depends on the specs of the trade, but 100 primers aren’t getting a pound of powder. Then again it depends on the powder.

Do some market research and you’ll find out what pulls a higher premium. Check gunbroker every once in a while or other market places.

No way 100 primers would get you 1lb of Retumbo.

Geeze.  The barter value is whatever you and who you are bartering with decide on.  If you don't know or can't figure you stuff's value compared to his, or how badly either of you needs the other guys stuff, I can't help.

Bartering is driven by wants and needs, unlike trading where you try to get an equal monetary value.

And, yes, I know both terms are interchangable.

Then, it's sort of like when you were younger and did not have a car.  Your buddy drove, and you paid for his meal, gas, movie, etc.

So, let's say you have a couple of pounds of bullseye, three boxes of primers, 100 pounds of bullets, etc.

If you go to someone, they set up their press, show you what to do, get you started, and you knock out 3000 rounds of 45 ACP, it would probably be reasonable to give them 500 rounds for their time, help, and use of their equipment.

That was supposed to say 1000 primers.

I don't want to do market research.  I was just seeing what people have experienced.

There was a forlorn shooter outside the LGS ready to whore himself out for some small rifle primers.

Equipment is out there. Prices are not nearly as insane as primers.

I just checked and eBay will get you a single stage press ($80), dies ($110), powder measure ($20ish) priming tool ($30)  and scale ($25).

So, if you had components, and were starting from nothing, you could be loading .223/5.56 with the exact setup I used for 5 years of loading national match ammo, for ~$275.

1000 primers is worth way more than a pound of any powder in current conditions.

Everything is available except primers.

So you will be trading stuff for primers.

Primers at the cheapest are .10 per primer.

You will trade stuff at shelf value for 100 primers equaling $10 or more.  Expect to pay a small premium when bartering for an item that is scarce.

So that $30 bottle of powder will get you 250 primers or so AT THE CHEAPEST.  Provided the person you are trading with needs the powder and doesn't need the primers.

Yeah, I would clean out the store at that price.

Brass is definitely an issue. New brass is hard to find and expensive as hell when it’s available. I’ve resorted to shamelessly picking up fresh looking brass at the range lately for calibers I’m short on.

Eta: I’m also paying people I know for their spent brass in certain rifle calibers.

I'm in the process of trading 6k Wolf large pistol primers for 500rds of 5.56 ammo

Primer prices have been jacked up for a while, but now I'm seeing asking prices for the popular 223 powders at $50 - $60 / lb. Bullet prices haven't increased very much (yet).

Thankfully I have more than enough reloading components for the next several years.

I found I think 10k spp and a few K rifle primers the other day and I'm thinking about trading them for a beach house, or at least a new camper

Get to buying equipment.

I have 5 presses (3 progressive, 2 single stage) and at least 3 sets of dies for every caliber I own plus dies for calibers I don't own but got cheap over the years.

I kept meaning to set up for reloading brass shotgun shells, and never got around to it.
Or 50 BMG.

Oh well.

Primers are inserted from the bottom.
Bullets and powder from the top.

Consider pricing accordingly.
