The tip of my right thumb has been split open for about six weeks now. I’ve tried all sorts of creams, ointments, bandages and even glued it shut several times. It just will not heal no matter what I try.
I’m seriously about to sterilize my soldering iron and cauterize this motherfucker. |

Just kidding on the pics... Get one of them blister bandaids and then don't touch it for three days. Even then - just change the bandaid.
|
|
I have found cutting away the hard calloused skin on the sides of the split makes it feel much better and heal faster.
I also usually cover it up with new skin |
|
Use hand lotion during the winter. That prevents most of these from happening.
|
|
If you'll get some regular generic glycerin from your local drug store, coat your hand in it and place a latex glove on it for the night, the next morning it will be soft and start healing.
Wife does it all the time when this happens....Also makes it easier to trim the formerly hard edges away as the whole split will soften. |

lanolin...every noticed how sheep sheerers have the best hands.

My mom gave me some O'Keeffe's years ago. Waxy and weird. I go for Aveeno, as infrequently as I can get away with, I hate using lotion but have to in the winter.

All this damn hand sanitizer has been accelerating my dry hand problems, usually doesn't happen until late February but my hands are a mess now. I've been using shea butter at night which helps but I can't use it during the day because it is too greasy and makes my hands slippery.

Working hands is the only stuff I like. I can't stand anything that feels greasy or oily.

Sometimes i have to trim the dead skin from around the cut before the superglue works.

I’ve had this problem every winter for the last few years. Wife swears by using lotion as soon as you get out of the shower and it seems to be working. Don’t wipe off the excess right away, try to let it sit and soak in for a few minutes.

It really works well. View Quote I’ve been using that every night for a month. |

Because callous isn't going to heal, it's dead. Soak your thumb in the bathtub until the callous is soft, then use something like a pumice stone or ped-egg to get rid of the callous. |

Have that problem as well. My hands are in water (hot, cold, and ice cold) frequently. Finger tips, knuckles and such crack and bleed. Super glue works but decided to be a bit more proactive and started trying different hand creams. I liked Gold Bond which did well. Then I started using CeraVe Moisturizing Cream which works great for me! Haven’t had any cracking since. Note that I have eczema as well which complicates things. Still, the CeraVa has been working.
Having said that....... there still is the superglue |

This worked for me, Take a rubber glove & cut the thumb part off of it, clean the wound & put neosporin on it, place some vaseline petroleum jelly inside the front part of the cut off glove, slide it on your thumb & use waterproof surgical tape to hold it on, now leave it alone, replace as necessary, in a couple of days you will be gtg.
In the future be sure you only use quality hand sanitizer like Purell, the cheap stuff will destroy your hands in the winter & wear gloves while working, hand cleaner like GoJo i have to use to get grease & paint off hands really dries them out leading to split skin like you describe, the covid vinyl gloves really save my hands! |

I don’t know about cracked fingers, but there’s nothing more embarrassing than having two young, cute women examining your butthole due to an anal fissure. Be careful lifting heavy items boys.

@BuickDan did it heal on it' own or did you have to get surgery

When I worked as a mechanic full time I found that Fast Orange hand cleaner would dry the shit out of my hands. I changed hand cleaners and that made a big difference.

I used to have to hit my fingers on a belt sander to get the dead skin around cracks down enough and they still didn't want to heal. More water and about 80% of my issues went away. Cetaphil moisturizing cream in the morning, and noon and night.
Crazy glue the split for now. But start the Cetaphil afler you glue it. |

I think it’s just a combination of callouses from weight lifting and running and sweating in the cold winter air. |

As mentioned above...Bag Balm! It is the shit! I get bad, deep splits in winter, Bag Balm will heal that up in a couple of days. Apply liberally 2 or 3 times a day and before bed. As others said, wear cotton gloves at night to keep it from getting everywhere. It IS the answer!

Slather on moisturizing cream. Wrap in Saran Wrap and cover with socks overnight. Remove in the morning.
