This is more what you want one for half inch pipe.
https://www.amazon.com/LASCO-13-2301-Offset-Extractor-Nipples/dp/B00HYWF1O2 I have used a hacksaw blade and slowly cut the inside on two sides and tap the pieces out . You cant cut into the threads or it will leak . |

Shower arm threads are wafer thin. I usually just pick and peel them out with a tiny flathead or o-ring pick, and needle nose pliers.

I tapped an old butter knife into the broken part,
the I used a pair of pliers to turn it out |

Even if it is steel they usually use the cheapest (softest) stuff they can - as you already know.  When you put the new one in use teflon tape AND pipe dope. It'll never leak then. |
