I can either crawl and contort myself in an attempt to cut the pipe off and put a new one on, or try and get the broken threads out.

Is there any difference between this one $20 piece

The $8.99 set might last one time, and then you would have to buy the other one anyway.

This is more what you want one for half inch pipe.

I have used a hacksaw blade and slowly cut the inside on two sides and tap the pieces out . You cant cut into the threads or it will leak .

Shower arm threads are wafer thin.  I usually just pick and peel them out with a tiny flathead or o-ring pick, and needle nose pliers.

Op, they will all work fine for what you are doing, or go to any plumbing supply house & ask the counter guy for an "Easy Out" or "Broken Pipe Extractor" for a 1/2" pipe.
Don't sweat it, it's a Very simple easy job.

Small nailset.
Put it on the grinder to make a chisel point.
Tap with a small hammer until a small piece of pipe thread appears.
grab piece with jewelers needle nose and pull SLOWLY...

I tapped an old butter knife into the broken part,
the I used a pair of pliers to turn it out

These.

It's probably brass so fairly soft metal. Even if it is steel they usually use the cheapest (softest) stuff they can - as you already know.

When you put the new one in use teflon tape AND pipe dope. It'll never leak then.
