Cool stuff in this thread!
Helmet of Cpl. Bob F. Metcalf, USMC WWII.
It is a pretty early rig with early straps and hardware as well as a white rayon Hawley liner. There is even a large mesh cargo net on the helmet under the 1st pattern cover. He brought this home with him in his duffel bag which I also have, and it is just as he and his family left it.
Bob enlisted in the Marines at 17 years of age in the summer of 1943 after turning down a nomination to West Point by his Kansas congressman. He graduated from USMC Ordinance Supply School in San Francisco, CA shortly thereafter. Cpl. Metcalf would see action with the 4th Marine Division on the island of Saipan and turn 19 while on the island. Later his ordinance supply unit would be attached to the 3rd Marine Division for the assault on Iwo Jima where he would land on D+6.
Cpl. Metcalf was wounded on Iwo Jima in the back by shrapnel and received the Purple Heart Medal as well as several other service medals. He was discharged in 1946 and would go to serve in Korea as well.
