I bought a DDM4 PDW last January. Don't regret the purchase at all, but ammo has been a PITA, especially subs.

If you have 5 ARs and 10k ammo for each, sure.

If not, you need to buy stuff you NEED first.

No plans to go suppressed? That really takes most of the positives of 300BO off the table imo.

My favorite guns to shoot are suppressed blackouts.

My feeling is if you don't already have what you need/want - now is not the time to get into it.  I mean, unless it is already in a caliber you have.  Getting ammo for something new is going to be difficult and extremely expensive.  I am just glad I sold everything other than a bb gun that I have.  It doesn't actually work - i think it is just a spring though so I am hopeful that I can fix it.  If not - no big deal I probably shouldn't have a bb gun either so I am ok with that.

OP is in MI, so he may have s a different story.....but I went .300blk specifically because I wanted a really short barrel for HD/SD, and I could not have a can.

I struggled with this exact thing - I really wanted a 300 blk but felt it was foolish to get into a new caliber right now.

I was in my LGS last week for something unrelated and saw a DD PDW pistol on the shelf! Decided to just go for it. I do have a Sandman S in jail so this will be the perfect host for it.

I called around and managed to find 350 rounds at a different nearby shop - paid a premium but bought it all.

300 Blk is available online and not cheap...but frankly 5.56 is catching up to it real fast. I paid $1.35/round...5.56 isn't far off.

If you've got the cash and understand ammo isn't cheap go for it. Who knows what the future holds...I'm spending some money these past few months to just get everything I've wanted. Who knows how much longer we have.

I assembled one as a range toy.

Then I put my 30 cal Specwar can on it and shot subs through it.

Then I took all the shit range toy parts off and replaced them with good ones.

300bo with subs and a can is Hollywood quiet.

My first build was .300 BO pistol, given ammo prices I should have just built a 5.56.  Meh...no regerts.

I just started reloading just to be able to shoot my .300 blk.  If you dont reload forget it.  If you dont have, or plan on getting a can forget it.  I just bought 1000 small rifle primers and 1k of small pistol for $120 each.  Last time I paid $100.  Its costing me .45 cpr with free brass and labor for subs.  Supers saves nothing because you save on the projectile but it takes twice as much powder.  Subs are going for up to $4 per round!!!

This.

I have people begging me to make them ammo at $1/k.

My cost is about $0.07/rd (cast bullet subsonics).

Would be worth it if I had time to do anything but work and be dad/husband.

Do you own a 556? Do you want a kaboom because that is how you get one.

I sold all my 300BO ammo and rifles / barrels after so many kaboom threads.

As a subsonic, suppressed SBR, yes.

If anything else, I'd go 7.62x39 for ammo availability and cost.

Yeah as a big .300 fan for various purposes... if you do not already have a stash of ammo, or sufficient components to keep you in ammo.. I would say definitely not, unless you have a burning need for subsonic 200-220gr .30 cal projectiles zinging downrange.

As someone who just recently FO’d on a 9” BCM because it was for sale locally for a reasonable price, I’m here to tell you, the ammo situation isn’t just bad, it’s almost completely unavailable for any price.

I broke down and ordered a 160 round bucket of 150gr soft points from that gorilla company a few days ago, something stupid like $280 shipped. Still haven’t even gotten a shipping notice on it. Hopefully it shows up though, I can’t justify owning something unless I can at least sight it in and have a couple mags loaded for it. My plan was to get a can and run subs in it but unless you want to pay 3.50+/rd subs are gone.

I have two semiautomatic .300s, a 10.5" SBR and a Rattler. Both are spectacularly fun with subsonics and capable with good supersonic ammo in terms of hunting. I also built a Solo .300 straight pull pistol, which is silly quiet because there's no action noise - it's kind of an oversized Welrod. The round is allot of fun, but I'm only in it for the sake of suppressing it. If you aren't going to suppress, you're money is better served with a 7.62x39 gun, whether it be an AK or AR variant. If you later decide to suppress, 7.62x39 subsonic is pretty cool, though it won't cycle in my AKs.

Funny, I had posted a link to that Gorilla site about two weeks ago, and every day I would look at it and think about ordering some, but could never pull the trigger on a bucket of it.  It is all OOS now, and that was one of the few places that had ammo of any sort in stock.

Cheapest ammo out there is like $1.40 a round for FMJ...and that is a good deal at the moment.  Some places want $2.00 for Wolf steel.

A year ago I was buying Hornady Black 110gr V-max for about $0.62 a round shipped.

Interesting. Did he figure out what the issue was? I hadn’t heard of them but did some research before I ordered, seems like they have pretty favorable reviews. 2 out of 5 is exceptionally awful so I’d imagine it’s either an issue with the gun or they have literally completely abandoned any form of QC and are just trying to cash out as much as possible before they go out of business.

10.5 isn't short enough to be easy to put in a small pack and isn't long enough to take advantage of the 300's velocity potential.
For a 10.5 barrel 5.56 works fine.

Now get down to 7-8 inches and you got a handy PDW.
