I've had a few encounters with cops over the years, even got stopped once because someone had reported shots fired in the neighborhood and had multiple guns, including submachineguns, pointed at me as I followed their instructions to get out of my car and walk towards them. That was in high school, found out the next week it was a classmate and he'd unloaded some rock salt on an individual of high melanin content looking in his back door in a non-melanin neighborhood. Knowing him, it was probably someone who knew him through illicit activities involving misappropriated electronics or recreational pharmaceuticals, needless to say he wasn't more than an acquaintance. Strangely, staying calm, not arguing, asking for clarification of confusing instructions, etc... has always worked to keep me out of bracelets and from doing the electric boogaloo. But I'm not a Fed, so I don't believe I'm better than everyone else... When I HAVE encountered cops who were power-tripping, the situations got resolved later with phone calls or personal discussion with more senior officers (working armed security at the convenience store right across the street from a mini-precinct had it's advantages), not on the scene. I've never had a cop object when they've asked me to do something that would expose a previously undisclosed firearm to them (no duty to announce here) and I've paused and asked "doing X would require me to put my hands near a firearm, how do you want me to proceed?" Of course, I also try to stay in states where gun ownership and carry is common and the cops are used to it, and I certainly don't go knocking on people's doors :-) (and working security and having to go into a woman's hotel room because she fell asleep on the phone with her husband and he was worried because he couldn't reach her because her phone was off the hook was a bit nerve-wracking, from a liability standpoint if nothing else, it was just me and the night manager so there was no independent witness who could be there with me). |
