I’m sure there’s plenty about this in the archives...but I can’t see it. Please share your ideas about good, secure ways to store ammo in the garage. Safes, lockable cabinets, whatever you use. I have 3 and a half boxes of .22 lr and a box of #8 12 gauge to store, but I’m hoping to have several ammo cans full to store in the future. Thanks. Pic of my only rifle and shotgun attached just for something to look at. Attached File |

Put it on a shelf and lock your garage door?
An ammo can with some desiccant would be good to keep moisture controlled. |
|
Job box or a cheap RSC from bjs or tractor supply would work. Just be mindful of humidity in your garage. Best of luck. Nice start to your collection!

That’s an impressive arsenal you have there. I’m just starting collecting myself.

My garage is a separate building, so I don't store ammo in it. |

Anything can be defeated , given enough time.
What level of deterrence are you seeking, how much room in the garage will be dedicated to this storage, and what is your budget |

How "secure" is the climate in your garage? That's also an important consideration. Ammo cans with dessicant would be a must unless you keep a constant temp year-round.

There are fire rated safes made for ammo, and lockable metal cabinets which can be secured to studs. Cabelas/Bass Pro carries both types.

Good replies so far. In my mind, with that much ammo, you are going to want to build some sort of underground bunker. I can’t see risking that much ammo with anything less.

I’m looking to make it as difficult as reasonably possible, but I understand that it being in the garage makes it easier to get to...and to take it off the property. |

View Quote Not sure it applies to the current availability situation, but once you get to a certain level you secure the storage location vs a storage container. Even a couple of Job Boxes become unworkable for large quantities. I use heavy duty shelving, with a 5.56cans stacked two deep per shelf, five shelfs per rack. Everything is in cans for fire safety and such, but the racks themselves are not lockable. Instead, the location is inside several layers of physical security. I suppose if you wanted to put a "cage" of some kind on the shelving you could, if you were willing to sacrifice the clearance space around the racks that would require. |

Boobies traps. I mean pics of actual boobies then the thief's will forget about what they wanted.

This thread is relevent to something that popped up on my timeline today. One of my friends took an old pepsi vending machine and gutted it and made a 12 gun storage(not calling it a safe) out of it. Not a bad idea really.

Could you just build a "closet" in the corner with a steel skinned exterior door? Do it in the corner adjacent to the house and one side would be "conditioned".
Put one of these on the outside of the door: https://www.amazon.com/SmartSign-Danger-Voltage-Inside-Aluminum/dp/B00T7XP1NC?ref_=ast_sto_dp |

Does your wife not allow this stuff in the house? Guns and ammo are better off in the climate controlled part of your house.

Don't store your good ammo in your garage, put it someplace without big temperature swings or exposure to whatever chemicals stored.
For that stash, put it in the pockets of your coats in the closet. |

Someone could easily walk away with a .30 cal ammo can. Unacceptable. View Quote Let me expound on my earlier comment then. How are people who would steal your ammo can getting into your garage? How are people who would steal your ammo can trying to enter your garage (defeating your security measures you just added) without you being alerted and dealing with it? How are people who would steal your ammo can coming onto your property to approach your garage without you having notice of that? Those LAYERS are what build security, way more than one single thing like a locked box or safe. If you are going to focus on a single barrier, I've seen folks lock ammo cans to shelfs, eyebolts, etc using something like this and a chain: Attached File |

Really like the Ruger 10 22. Have one just like it minus scope. Keeping it slick and light.
