I've been dipping into country music a bit more lately and am looking for some recommendations.  I will admit I have a hard time with real old school twangy stuff like Hang Williams.  But besides Johnny Cash I couldn't really get into anything else...until Chris Stapleton.  I've been wearing his albums out lately, I think the elements of rock, soul, and blues mixed in some of the songs really works for me and I just love his singing voice.  So I picked up some George Jones Greatest His just because he is a great singer and so far its okay, but a bit too much plodding classic country at times.  Then I picked up Eric Church's Chief album.  Which has some good cuts but has that modern radio country vibe going on which can be hit or miss for me.  But I'm enjoying this album.

Also been listening to Old Crow Medicine Show which is more folk Americana music.

I also grabbed Stirgil Simpson's A Sailor's Guide to Earth which I'm digging, especially the second half of the album.  I've been told he has a Waylon Jenning's vibe going on so maybe I should check that out.

So what else should I be checking out?  A bit of rock elements is nice without going over to full on Southern rock is sweet.

My first thought was Clint Black, but I'm not well versed in the "genre" classifications so I might be way off here.

Two that really do it for me that fall into that category are Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.

Lucinda:
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road

(probably her best album - Car Wheels on a Gravel road

Gillian and Dave Rawlings:

Thanks for the tips.  I have heard Jamey Johnson, well a couple songs, and will be checking out more of his stuff.  Though at times it sounds like he has that 90's Seattle "yarl" thing with how he sings.

A lot of other videos to check out.

I think it was Johnny Cash that told his daughter, if you don’t know the old standards, you don’t know Country Music.

Country music left me in the early 90’s. I’ll give you a list of stars that you can look at. But I like the classics.

Hank, Lefty, And Webb Pierce.
Buck Owens, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Dolly Parton
George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Glenn Campbell, David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings,
Willie Nelson,
Statler Brothers, Allan Jackson, Randy Travis, George Strait, And Hank Jr.

Pretty much my play list. I’m sure I Lefty out some.

I've heard a lot of the old stuff but it doesn't do a ton for me.  Though I think I'm going to check out Waylon Jennings a bit more.

I have to say as a follow up to this that Sturgill Simpson rules.  His music covers all kinds of styles as well but damn he is good.

Also Bluegrass rocks.  Billy Strings, The Dead South, and the Native Howl are all in rotation.

The Jamey Johnson I checked out was nearly all ballads so not sure that is what I want but its not bad.

Blackberry Smoke were the first group I thought about.  I think they consider themselves Southern Rock, and they are, but they tread very close to the "country" line in a lot of their songs.  When I first discovered them, I read a review where the writer stated they are essentially a country rock band fronted by a country singer, which seems pretty accurate.

Blackberry Smoke - One Horse Town (Homecoming: Live in Atlanta)

And since the OP has now stated he likes Bluegrass, this video popped up on my FB feed some time back.  This is all I know of their music, but I like what I've heard.  I did NOT expect the voice that came out of the guitar player!!

Henhouse Prowlers - Full Session - 2/4/2020 - Paste Studio ATL - Atlanta, GA
