Prob not what you are looking for but.  I just use an Xbox one X.  Besides Blu Ray I can download an app to steam pretty much any service.

Also could play games if I wanted.  But really MS is trying to make the Xbox one a total entertainment system rather than just a game system.

I can't make up my mind... Looked at Sony, Samsung, Phillips and a few others...

I know nothing stays current forever (or for a long time), but I want something good thats not going to be outdated or moot in 6 months if that's possible.

Best bang for the buck is the Sony UBP-X700. Mine has been flawless and the picture is great.

Whatever the top of the line xbox is at the moment.
It's going to be getting software updates long after they've pulled the plug on a standalone player.

I ended up picking up the Sony UBP-X700 at Walmart. They had it in stock local for the same price it was on Amazon and a few other places.
I've not used it a lot yet.  I think we watched one Red Box movie that wasn't even 4K..

Hookup, install, update and operation are a breeze.
I hope to try out the 4K portion soon.

4k TV, 3D TV and especially 8k TV seem like they may be the Beta and Laser discs of this era.

I dunno, 4K might set in...
I'm seeing more and more stuff on Netflix and at Walmart, Spectrum has big plans to offer more 4K channels and content.  Roku is starting to have more and more. They have a few 4K streaming channels with Eye candy and one app that lists 4K moves, then FWDs you to the channel or app that has it.  Kinda like a 4K only tv guide.  I was watching a few things last night like a Documentary on Ken Block and that AWD mustang, another about the Custom Street Car Nightlife in Tokyo and one about the Northern Lights and sky shots up around Alaska.  Not much substance, but a lot of pretty colors.... :)

Now 3D, several years ago I was hearing some buzz about it, less than I'm hearing about 4K now and its slowly stopped.

I never hear mention of it, in person or on the net.  I don't even see Walmart touting it anymore in adds or POP signage in store.
8k, I think is a few years off, if it even makes it.  I mean 4K is not even really mainstream yet.

But, you can never really tell till after the fact. Those are just my guesses.

can play dvd and blu ray (as if there were some that can't (?)(IDK))

fwiw, my tv's are Samsung.

xbox one S or X.  4k blu ray, streaming box, gaming machine, and you can control your live tv through it.

You won't find a 'true' 4K player (4096?×?2160) out there for a reasonable amount of $$$.  You don't need it, since consumer-level TV's don't support it.

What you will find are 4K-UHD players (3840?×?2160)

I just bought a Sony UDP-X800M2 ($229.00 at Best Buy.)

My 'must have' criteria were:

- Separate HDMI video and audio out.  I'll feed the TV and my surround sound receiver separately.  My receiver doesn't have 4K pass-through capability, and I don't want to buy a new one yet.

- Ability to play almost all discs (4K UHD, HD Blu-ray, DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, CD, and others.)

- HDR-10 and Dolby Vision decoders.  Unfortunately, this player can't detect DV automatically - it must be menu selected when you play a disc that supports it.  I can live with that, and maybe a software update down the road will fix that.) My receiver is 7.1 THX, and will support many of the audio formats available.  It doesn't support Dolby Atmos, but that's another limitation that budget forces me to live with.  First world problem.

I'll end up with a Smart 4K TV that will stream content and feed an optical digital signal to one of the receiver's inputs, and a 4K player (the Sony) connected to an HDMI input on the TV, sending audio to a second input on the receiver.  The only switching I'll have to do is when I want to watch a disc, and then I'll have to switch both the TV and the receiver - oh well.

going to bump this old thread cause I'm looking for a blu-ray player.  currently I'm finishing my basement and it will have a home theater so I'm trying to figure out what to do about playing movies.  I have a PS4 Pro I could use which works well for me.  or dedicated player?  wait for the PS5?  or xbox one x?  anything change the last few months?

Bought a Samsung 75" Q90 TV Super Bowl weekend and had picked up a Xbox One X on Black Friday, plus some Monoprice HDMI cables.  Routing through a Denon middle of the road 4K receiver and a new Chromecast Ultra & Amazon Fire TV Cube.  So all equipment is 4K capable.  I cancelled DirecTV after 20 years and went YouTube TV and have not looked back.  So mainly streaming content from YouTube TV, YouTube, NetFlix and Amazon Prime, plus 1080/780 from OTA antenna.  But have played both DVD's and "regular" Blue-Ray's (no 4K Blu-Ray's) and just like any of the streaming content, the upconversion from the newer gen 4K equipment is amazing and when you see native 4K content on a big 4K tv its even more amazing.  I have not used the Xbox much for disks, but it works very well.

The best player on the market until you get to the ones that are in the thousands of dollars. I researched it a lot when I bought it a year ago and am extremely happy with it

For that price you could get an Xbox One X that does so much more and has a 12-core CPU... better software, more updates.

I really like my Sony UBP-X800M2

Mostly because it has separate HDMI outputs for video and audio.  One goes to my TV, the other goes to my A/V receiver.  My 7.1 receiver doesn't support 4K, so I can't use it to switch 4K video.  Handles Dolby, Ultra THX, and DTS just fine, though, so the audio tracks sound great.
