In a lot of places, you need a permit for anything considered a permanent structure.  If it's attached to a foundation, a house, etc., it's considered permanent.  So, if you're going to put in piers, footings, or a pad and bolt your pergola down, a lot of places would require a permit.

A permit for a pergola would be a piece of cake:  Basically drawings of the thing, and showing that it can handle snow load (if any) and wind load.

That being said... I don't think anyone I know has ever obtained a permit for a pergola.

Need to check locally OP. Codes and Permit requirements vary.

Only for more than 200 square feet here. You'll have to check your local planning/zoning.

Not here

But considered an accessory structure so cant have more than zoning allows and must meet setback requirements

I was the Building Official for my county in Central Florida. We exempted purgolas from permitting.

As other have mentioned, check with your local dept. to be sure and stay with in your set backs.

I’m permitting my car port pergola with my HOA.  Car ports are strictly forbidden, but my back yard car port pergola will be 100% HOA approved.  It will also be car sized spacious.

That's sounds like a common thing.  In my county/ township the same size applies for a storage shed  or any backyard structure.

Yep, my county building dept has a website with all the applications and fees.

I think a pergola would be a covered porch. It's a pretty cheap permit.

Permits? We don't need no stinking permits!
I poured a pad with footings and had an outdoor bbq built and the wife and I built a pergola over it.
