I may have forgotten to ask if a permit was required, so I don't know.

If it's attached to a foundation, a house, etc., it's considered permanent. So, if you're going to put in piers, footings, or a pad and bolt your pergola down, a lot of places would require a permit. A permit for a pergola would be a piece of cake: Basically drawings of the thing, and showing that it can handle snow load (if any) and wind load. That being said... I don't think anyone I know has ever obtained a permit for a pergola. |

Only for more than 200 square feet here. You'll have to check your local planning/zoning.

I was the Building Official for my county in Central Florida. We exempted purgolas from permitting.
As other have mentioned, check with your local dept. to be sure and stay with in your set backs. |
