Visited Philadelphia today to get some traffic infractions in, figured I'd try a cheesesteak. Went to Pat's. Really debating if I want to go through the traffic and awful parking to try Geno's another day. Pat's was okay, seems like the meat needed salt, could have used more meat. A bit on the high side, and the employees have the personality of a gulag wall. Is Geno's any better?

That sandwich looks like a diaper after a toddler has a 6-er of bean burritos.

Lol neither. Dalessandro's, Johns Roast Pork, Oh Brother, etc

I prefer Steve’s if you are in Northeast Philly. If I’m at Pats and Genos I usually hit Pats. There’s been two murder at Pats the last couple months. It’s best not to be there when all the drunks show up.

Pat's has better rolls, but neither if you want real meat.
Cross the bridge into south jersey and pick any random pizza shop for a better cheese steak. |
|
My fiance is from Philadelphia and says both a horrible. She said most "pizza stores" make better ones.

Both of those places suck unless you’re a tourist
Best cheesesteak I’ve had in Philly was at Ishkabibbles on South St. |
|
I work in the city often and have lived in PA my whole life for the most part amd I haven’t been to either
Its common knowledge that they are both shit and tourists eat there I really like John’s roast pork shacks cheesesteak and Steve’s price of steaks aswell |

My firehouse makes the best cheesesteaks. I will be there monday. It shall be good.

As someone that grew up 90 minutes from Philly and skipped school to go there.... Geno's

I grew up in PA. Steak sandwiches, whatever you call them, are one of the absolutely easiest things to make. It's very hard to fuck up a good cheesesteak. There were a dozen sandwich joints in Allentown that made fantastic cheesesteaks. There's a bunch here. I actually don't know if I've ever had a bad one.
I don't think Geno's or Pat's is bad. They're both good. But they're "famous" so you have to fight the crowds. It's like Gino's in Chicago or really any of the "tourist trap" joints in Chicago. You don't need to do the "famous" thing to get the experience. The Hofbrauhaus in Munich wasn't anywhere near the best bar in Munich. |

Last time we were there with another couple. We split up and got both and did a blind taste test. I liked Genos and the other three liked Pats.

My buddy took me to a place in Upper Darby. Absolutely incredible cheesesteak. 25 years ago so I don’t remember the name.
|
|
Steve's for me.....Pats if I have no choice.
That said, Manny Browns on South St in the 80's and early 90's made a damn good steak sandwich |
|
Not sure if it was Jim's mentioned a few times already, but I was in Philadelphia for 5 days I ate a cheesteak for lunch and dinner all 5 days.
The bar/restaurant on South St. With indoor/outdoor eating was the best. |
|
I live a mile down the street.
Pat's can go fuck themselves. Everyone makes cheesesteaks. If you're roaming around South Philly there's Johns Roast Pork, Uncle Oogies, City Pizza, Not Just Pizza, Phillips, and a hundred more. |
|
There's a fair amount of pretty mediocre cheesesteaks. I imagine it's like any regional food
that gets a lot of hype and has tons of places making it. It's still steak and cheese, so it's pretty difficult to make an actually bad one, but plenty of places you're getting grey, unseasoned beef with cheese |
|
Four foodies went to Philly with me. We did Gino's and Pats back to back for a taste test. Didn't even finish the sandwich said the stuff is tourist crap. It's literally a mushy steakumm with cheese whiz.
Accidentally wound up at Tony Luke's later that day and it was miles better. |
