Quoted: Tame cows sometimes don't act like tame cows. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: But aren't they just like tame cattle ![]() Tame cows sometimes don't act like tame cows. I grew up around large animals, so I'm not afraid of them, but have a healthy respect for how dangerous they can be. They don't need to intentionality hurt you in order to kill you. Most cows are indifferent to humans and know humans will give them food. If there's a herd of cattle, sometimes there will be a playful one who will try to kill you. If there's a bull, be sure to always know where it is. One time I was sitting on a backhoe in a large pig pen, waiting for the farmer to mark off an area to dig. My front bucket was on the ground, the rear was locked in traveling position. A large sow decided to use the rear bucket to scratch an itch. I found out because the front wheels lifted off the ground. It bounced the front wheels off the ground 3 or 4 times and then wandered off. |

As a group of friends and I was cutting through a field in the late 80's(high school age).in eastern Jackson County MO. We noticed Buffalo in the field too. The herd started running towards us and we were too far from another fence line to escape.
Ended up climbing up a hedge apple tree. We were there for a bit till they left the area for us to run like heck to get out of there ![]() |

All of the bison I dealt with were wild from Canada. When I say.. for the most part. The young ones that were born on the farm were slightly more laid back. but still not tame. |

On a tangent. The son and his wife decide to go to Smoky Mtn National Park. Th3y had just gott3n some new hot shit digital camera they were wanting to take some wildlife pics with.
Son sees a black bear and decides to get a pic. Instead of using the zoom feature, he decides to use the veiw finder to look through to creep up closer. Come to find out after the story came out from the daughter in law, the son ended up getting about 15'-20' from the bear. Me and the wife just looked at him and asked "What is the matter with you?" |

Nothing asserts dominance like slaying 3,500 LB of Bison for shits and giggles then only carrying 100LB back to the wagon… |

Quoted: When I was in Custer State Park SD about 20 years ago I was stopped while a whole herd crossed the road in front, around, and behind me. It was late spring/early summer and there were a TON of babies in the group. The moms all had that look on their face that said "mess with my baby, you die". I just sat there in my tiny Honda hoping they didn't get pissed off enough to ram it LOL. At one point one baby got on the opposite side of my car from Mom and Mom shot me a look as she passed my car hood that made my blood run cold. I just put my head down and held my breath until she moved on. My window was halfway down and I could smell them and hear the snorting. It was both amazing and terrifying at the same time. That same trip I saw idiot tourists in Yellowstone chasing down bison and elk. There were so many "tourons" in the park even back then that it kind of spoiled some of the park for me. I was sort of hoping that they'd get too close to the thermal features LOL. Matter of fact, I think someone had fallen into one a few days before I was there. View Quote Exact same thing happened to me. I was in my wife's brand new Mercedes. It was the first car we ever bought higher than a new Toyota or Honda. I really didn't want one of them smashing into the car. And yeah, their look in their eyes sitting there level with them is scary. |

Quoted: I wish I could afford the fathers coat from legends of the fall. I'd ROCK that like Huggy Bear! View Quote I lived in a small town in Mt that had 2 bars. One across the street from each other. Knew a guy that was doing the bar hop wearing his big buffalo coat. As he was hammered and walking across the street, the tourists cars slowed to let the drunk cross. Well one he dove on the hood of the little car and terrified them pretty good. |

Having grown up outside of Custer State Park, we spent a lot of time around buffalo. The only time I was really nervous was when we ended up in the middle of the herd in our 1944 Willys jeep. The slowest buffalo was still faster than the Jeep.
When I had my bodyshop I fixed lots of cars that buffalo hit and a few that hit buffalo. |

You do not want to over cook it. There are many ways to season it or cook it. But in general you want medium high heat and under 5 minutes a side. Probably more like 3 to 4. I have cooked it with all sorts of different oils to "fatten" it up. Avocado oil and such. I like a little bacon grease or even cooking after hamburgers in a little hamburger grease. Bison chili and stuff is awesome too. Bison steaks are yummy too. |

View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: People are stupid. We pulled into the gate of Denali and I look over and see a bunch of tourists heading towards a moose and a calf. I pull over and say to the kids "We are going to watch someone get killed today". The tourists head for the cow with cameras and she stands up and does a shake thing to get the rain off. Then she charges and people scatter in 360 degrees. Oh well, not today Darwin! https://ajournalofmusicalthings.com/wp-content/uploads/Minions_what.png Yep. I have seen that a few times this year already. Retards will walk right up on moose. Same thing with elk. I had a very humorous conversation with a ranger in RMNP about the idiots we were watching do dumb things. If they weren't crowding the wildlife they were playing frogger in traffic and blocking up the road. I use a lens to "walk up" on them. ![]() This guy was keeping an eye on me from a ways up. ![]() Idiots were walking up to them with their kids. ![]() ![]() I have had them get uncomfortably close. The elk above walked within 20 feet of my open doors on the van while I was making breakfast. When they get close it's not because I walk up to them. Common sense says to retreat. But.. common sense ain't so common. Rik and I had this guy walk way too close to us when we were in the park. He had to be shooed away. He was likely looking for food because assholes that think it is cute to feed them. ![]() I have very few pics of bison. Because I used to work with them as stock animals. I don't see the allure that the average public does. Yes they are beautiful. Yes. They are cool to see. But, to me they are nothing to get excited about. I had a very pretty woman walk up to me in trnp just in awe asking me if I had ever seen such a beautiful sight as the heard that we were looking at. She looked at me weird when I said.. yep. They are beautiful. But I don't understand why people get so excited. I used to butcher them. ![]() We talked for a bit and she understood where I was coming from. |
