Bren, Sten, Owen, Hotchkiss... what is up with the odd magazine placement on UK & Commonwealth guns?

Prone.

And a lot of commonwealth mg’s were copied from other designs. ZB VZ26, MP 18/28, MP34 etc...

A gun that I have a powerful draw towards.

No parts kits though. No semis and a handful of transferable originals.

I imagine making a semiauto copy would be preposterously expensive nowadays.

Not necessarily, it's just a tube gun with some extra bits added on. You could probably heavily modify a sten kit and get the same result for not a whole lot of money. It'd need an inverted bolt but the rest would be easy

They kinda are.

That said, they do work, and work well. You could do much worse in regards to WWII-era SMGs (*cough*Reising*cough*).

Quite the opposite.  A solid design that the Australians loved.  Remained in service well into the 60's.

In this case, ignorance is NOT your friend.

The Owen has a reputation as an EXCELLENT SMG.  The vertically placed magazine reduces catching on vines and brush in the jungle (compared to the Sten), and allows a lower prone firing position.

Pretty, they are not.  Reliable/robust, they are.

The US Army tested the Owen in the 1942-1943 SMG Trials.........

It out-performed every other SMG in the world that was tested........in every category

The only reason we ended up with the M3 Grease Gun was due to the fact GM was ready to start stamping them out, and that the Owen wasn't in .45 Calibre.

And yet you have not one, but two pistol grips hanging down nearly as far as the mag would...

This gun appeals to people who think slam-fire black pipe shotguns are cool.

They do have a great rep but I'd rather have a Sterling if we're talking about Commonwealth buzzguns.

Easy 18er, aproximately 1/3 - 1/4 of magazine would extend beyond the pistol grips which would affect the operators ability to get prone. In combat prone is good.  Weapon has a SOLID reputation amongst the Australians which is good enough for me, although I’d take a sterling over it just because I’ve got trigger time on a sterling and non on an Owen.

Owen had a fantastic reputation in Vietnam.

All of the gun guys in SF and elsewhere that have handled one speak highly of it.
