It makes it really hard to find out anything. As an example... My dad was a WWII Vet. He never talked about his childhood. I learned from other people how bad it was. His daddy (The grandfather I never knew) was a mean drunk, and used a bullwhip to chase the kids out of the "house." They slept in the attic of that "house" that, nowadays would not be considered a fit place for animals. (My dad told me none of the above, but told me that when he was a boy, six of them slept in the same bed, and they would wake up in the winter with snow on the quilt because it has drifted through the cracks in the walls.) That story made more sense as I grew older and learned more from other people. I learned about his mean father second-hand, because he never talked about that time in his life. They just didn't talk about the ugly. There are other stories. The fact that my dad turned out even half way decent is a miracle. |

My dad worked for the CCC in California. He enlisted when he was like 15. Ended up in the Aleutian Islands on the famous landing when the Japanese were escaping in small boats... He came back from service and married my mom just before he shipped out for the war. She stayed behind. The stories from that time tell me that I am so freaking spoiled. |

He lived 900 miles away, but at one point my grandma got sick and so for 3 months, I drove out there every Thursday night (13 hours) and drove back Sunday mid day to be at work on Monday. My dad would be coming out Monday and leave Thursday etc. This was after I got out of the Army, and after that he would talk To me about the war and his childhood extensively. What that generation went through growing up in the poverty of the depression is insane. He once told me a story of having to eat skunk because they struck out on all of their hunting and traps that week. They weren’t all bad stories, he told me some hilarious and awesome stories as well. My grandma recovered from that sickness like miraculously one day, we were expecting her to die any day and then like 4 days later she was home and fine, although weak. She had 2 more good years after that and then passed one day taking a shower. |

This thread crossed my mind today because I have a co-worker with whom we make fun of each other all day; and I remember once KwS said thats such a weird guy thing. Today I used our label maker to print out a sticker that reads "Step capacity: 1 His Name (500 lbs)" and put it on a step stool at work.
