When I first saw this older gentleman at the gas station, I figured he would be at the back of the pack. Well, it turns out he used to be a racer in the 80s and won a few championships so he was actually faster than most of us, myself included! I was blown away to see how fast he was riding on that thing View Quote Old Guy on Touring Bike Goes 100+MPH with Crotch Rockets! |

He was running a pretty conservative line from what I saw, just rolling out of the corners and holding a steady pace. Rice rocket guy filming was putting too much throttle and and too much brake trying make himself faster, trying to lean as far as he could in the corners... he was plalying around. Old guy was was just out for a nice Sunday drive. It wasn't his speed that made him fast, it was his pace through the corners. Holding a quick pace like that takes some thought and skill.

Was that touring bike a hd bagger type or the adventure touring style like the 1290 ktm I’ve seen discussed here?

Quoted: That's how I was taught to ride. No wasted motion. I never really could develop serious speed like some guys. I had some kind of internal limiter that kept me from getting too close to that edge. I did nearly drive a kid on a ZX7 to tears once trying to keep up with me on my Buell. On paper he had it all over me. On asphalt, smooth is fast. View Quote Not a Motorcyclist, but as was pointed out, that 'old guy' stayed right in the middle lane, came up after a turn to vertical with no wasted motion...hard to tell from the camera angle, but the rider with the camera seemed to be back and forth across the lane, etc.. |

I'm by no means fast, but I'm bagger fast. We make several trips a year to deals gap in Tn/Nc and I routinely pass crotch rockets. They get pissed, when that big and slow Road King or Street Glide comes up and around them. Normally the wife is on the back too. If you aint livin life on the edge, you are taking up too much room!

I had a 1984 interceptor, used to do 100 MPH outside town south of Fairbanks, cops basically said, keep it outside town and we wont ticket you, just bury you. There was a pack of us that would do the 50 miles in 30-40 minutes, gas up and do it again. I was usually middle of the pack with a 20 year old 500CC against guys with modern fuel injected 600 -750 CC bikes. We were young and stupid, no doubt.

I was riding up in the mountains on my new triumph Bonneville (Not a fast bike). I stopped at the watering hole and one of my buddies who was a former racer asked if he could try it out. I said sure. He cam back about an hour later and told me to watch out for a bunch of pissed off sport bike riders cause he had just embarrassed most of them on our loop.
Agree with the above... smooth is fast. |

The powerband on the crotch rocket with the camera is probably very different from the bike just ahead.
Also, the crotch rocket has likely more horsepower and less weight, so it can easily close the gap. What the camera dude doesn't have is low end torque, which is nice when exiting corners. |

Passed many a faster bike with my ~55hp over the years, but the roads i typically ride are a biiiiit more technical...

I've found 90mph to be the sweet spot for cruising speed for me. K1600GT.
On that bike, I'm more in control at 90 than any of the whiners here are at 55. As a side note, I finally signed up for American Supercamp this spring. Everybody loves flattrack, right? |
