I shoot rifles from the left side due to being cross dominant and for the last 10 years I have used a Sig 556 as my go-to work rifle.

But, I finally broke down and decided I would build an AR to take the place of my Sig.

I built a side-charging AR to mimic the Sig manual of arms (as I have adopted them) thinking I could get a lightweight and reliable rifle that I can adapt to easily which has replaceable parts from my stock (Sig parts are expensive and I dont have too many ).

Even with the gas turned down, barely locking open with Tula, the fucking thing pelts me in the face with brass

Dad wasn't lying when he said he taped a wooden block to his M16A1.

Are you sure you're getting hit with brass when you shoot Tula?

The clip holds the bullets shells in an AR

If it is just a rifle for taking in the woods and the brass/steel is hitting you in the face, consider getting a brass catcher. I have several of the Caldwell picatinny rail brass catchers. They work great, and it is real nice to not have to chase your brass everywhere if you reload.

Even if you are just using steel cased ammo, you can let it catch it and dump it in the trash later, or just unzip the bottom of the catcher so it drops right out to the ground.

If it's a duty rifle and they won't let you use something like that, I guess you can try rigging something up, but I'm guessing it would be frowned upon just the same.

Now you just need to post a pic of the AR with the selector in the appropriate position.

Apparently you missed the part where it is a side charger

Reciprocating charging handle and a brass catcher would be entertaining

I was right handed and right eye dominant for 36 years until I went mostly blind in my right eye.
That takes some getting used to.

It does, I have made myself somewhat ok on both eyes, but I am slow and clunky at right hand operations

Is there not a brass deflector?

I’m not familiar with side charging ARs. If not, how does the SIG prevent the same thing from happening?

put hot sauce in your left eye.

I'm cross dominant too, sucks.

My dad taped my eye and did everything else to make me a righty when I was little, to no avail.

I can remember him saying "I am not going to buy any of those expensive left handed guns for you"

True to his word he never did, but I got lots of sweet right handed stuff

1st world problems. I'm left handed, shoot left handed, and only shoot standard (normal) DI AR15's which have built in brass deflectors.

Any brass markings on the charging handle?

How about a bigger bolt knob?

I feel your pain.  LOL, literally.

I also shoot lefty.  I also recently built a sexy side charging upper.  I also took it out and got pelted with brass.  I have not come up with a solution yet.

Maybe just shoot a rear charging AR like everyone else? How freaking hard is it to learn a rear charging system?

I'm left handed, don't get brass in the face and I shoot suppressed.

It's not that difficult to switch to a rear charger

@digger440

I took my sexy side charger AR upper out today with a selection of buffers.
Since we both shoot lefty I thought you might be interested.

My rifle is a 16" dissipator with triangle handguards, flat top side charging upper, and A2 stock.  Odd duck, but I like it and this one is mine, not many others similar to it.

Rifle buffer - pelted in the face with brass

Carbine buffer - brass missed my face, kind of brushed my right shoulder since I am shooting lefty.

Slash 45 cal buffer - custom made by Arfcom member Slash (I think) when Cav Arms lowers and Oly Arms 45 cal uppers were a thing.  Brass was still coming near my face.

Palmetto State Armory 45 cal buffer - Blue poly end - Ended up with an extra one of these from a previous purchase.  Slowed the bolt WAYY down, threw the brass way over my right shoulder and probably into the fella two benches over.  It was funny watching the bolt go "Kachunk" back and then forward but the main thing is it kept the brass off my face.  Actually enjoyed putting a few rounds down range for a change.

Just to confirm I put the carbine buffer back in, and confirmed yes, still hitting my shoulder.  Replaced the extra heavy 45 buffer for a few more shots.

Anyways, thought I would share my trials with you.  Hope you get yours figured out.

I shoot left and had the same problem with my XM177e2 clone.
Grinding a slight angle on the ejector solved the problem.

There was a thread explaining it in the retro forum a few years ago.

I’ve been shooting ARs lefty for years..never been hit in the face with cases a single time...but I’ve never used an A1 upper.

All these folks shooting lefty like a bunch of godless heathens.

If Stoner thought they should be used lefty, he would’ve made them for lefties!

Yah damn wrong handed demons.
