I went up to the former lead/zinc mine in the hinterlands of SW WI today where I got certified for cavern/intro to cave in November. Did a couple of dives in December there. 3 hours drive each way. 0 degrees when I got there. 48F water temp. The access pond doesn’t freeze. Did about a 30 minutes dive. One buddy had primary light issues and another was getting water through drysuit zipper.

All gear pretty much froze after about 5-10 minutes out of the water. One of my regs wouldn’t come off the tank so I had to leave it on and deal with it when I got home. Bolt snaps on other stuff were frozen shut.

Why what? Cold water diving? Cold weather diving? Or cave/mine diving?

Easy. It’s three hours from home. The Great Lakes wrecks I’m obsessed with are often within a day’s drive. I don’t fly. If I can’t drive, I don’t dive. May head down to north FL cave country in the fall before I do full cave.

And I despise being hot.

My last time was in a quarry up on PA and I thought THAT was cold!

Least the water is generally clearer.

Just be careful that's the most dangerous recreational diving.

Yep. That’s why you get training. And why I’m taking the time to get some dives in before doing full cave.

I've said this before that I have zero interest in diving or anything you do, but I always enjoy your posts and learn interesting stuff that I'll never use

Your posts are always really neat and it's cool to see into your world. I really like the way you live

Well sure there's no doom and gloom for you right now, you use boating accidents as a great way to safely store your guns and just get them back as needed.

Video someone did very recently of diving the mine. The narration adds a lot of good info. Full cave class so further than I go in now.

Yes, I remember that well. You’ve had an interesting time of it since then!

Learned some more about the mine from that video.

The metal grate at the opening was put up when the mine was closed to keep purpose from driving cars back into it. It took two years for the mine to totally fill with water.

Also learned yesterday there are quite a few ketchup bottles on the upper level left by workers. You don’t see them until you’re quite far in
